Progressive Video Poker Question

Post by njmike37 »

I'm not really sure how to word this, but I can't seem to find any articles on this subject.  I'm trying to figure out how to calculate what the payback percentage is on progressive jackpot video poker machines.  It most certainly would be higher if the progressive is at a high level..

For example, a 9/6 DDB Progressive (I have found a few in AC on the quarter level) where there are actually 3 progressives on the same machine..

1.) Royal Flush (starts at $1000 or4000 coins)
2.) 4 aces with 2, 3, 4 (starts at $500 or 2000 coins)
3.) Straight Flush (starts at $62.50 of 250 coins)

Now, 9/6 DDB is going to return approx 98.98% normally with no progressives, but a few days ago I saw the following on the 25-cent progressive..

1.) Royal Flush: about $1214
2.) 4 aces with 2, 3, 4 : about $547
3.) Straight Flush: about $82

The paytable is the same except for the progressive winners, but how much positive expectation would the scenario I described above increase the normal payback percentage?

Anyone with information on how to calculate the gain in payback percentage please help!

Thanks in advance!

The easiest way to accomplish this task is to purchase one of the VP software programs (winpoker, FVP, VPfW) and alter the paytables to the values you specified. However, this isn't always that easy to do when you are in a casino and want to check it out.

Some folks figure out the payback for various intervals (eg. $100 increases) and write them down. Another method is to approximate the increase. For example, for $100 a RF progressive is increased you will ~ .2% increase in the payback. For every $50 the aces/kicker goes up you will see ~.25% increase in the payback. The SF is fairly minimal (.1% for each $20) in it's impact since it only accounts for .5% of the total return for DDB.

Once again, I can't emphasize too strongly the importance of having a good software program at your disposal. Using winpoker and plugging in the values you provided raised the payback of 9/6 DDB to 99.85%.

shadowman,

Wow, 99.85%?  That's pretty darn good for Atlantic City, especially once you add in the ~ 0.3% cashback the Taj has.

I bought VPfW a few weeks ago and have been still learning as I go.  I haven't figured out as of yet how to calculate the payback or alter the paytables.  How do you go about altering the paytables so I can get this info down?

Thanks!

Mike
