Just returned from RCI cruise 3 weeks ago (did the New England/Canada) voyage on Explorer of the Seas.  This is an eight year old ship.  Since it's an older ship, it has the old coin redemtion machines instead of the ticket ones, so if you want to switch machines, you gotta cash out all the coins & go to the cage to get your big bills to continue play.  Also, they don't have a large selection of vp games to choose from.  The newer ships have the modern, ticketed machines with more games to choose from.  Yes, the paytables do suck, as they are 6/5 on DDB on quarter machines.  You have to play $1 to get to 7/5 paytable.

As for machines being "tight" on cruise ships, I have to say your chances of success still largely depend on the machine's RNG and your strategy of play at any given moment.  This is true regardless of where you play (regular casino or cruise ship).  It doesn't matter if you're playing on the first or last nite, I hit several 4 of a kinds on different days of the voyage and even doubled my money on 3 occassions of play.  If you have a large enough bank roll, play $1 DDB betting max credits on cruise ships.
