I travel to Mississippi several times a year and it would be easy for me to cross the state line and play in Louisiana. But I do not. The reason is the Louisiana tax rate on jackpots is 6%, which reduces the payback % to the point where it is not worth it. 3% is the most I will pay in state taxes on jackpots. Anything beyond that is robbery. And if you are not a resident gambler of that state, then you cannot file to get it back against your losses. People need to send a message to high tax states by refusing to gamble there.

Rascal, how right you are. The wife lost $600 big ones to the State of Mississippi a number of years ago. That pretty much soured us on ever going back there. I tried to communicate with their State taxing authority, Casino Commission and Chamber of Commerce asking how one not being a resident could file to get it back. Nary one response. Oh, and by the way, you get taxed on the whole amount by your home state.

VPjunkie,

You might want to check with LA Downs. Since it has horse racing? it is not allowed to also have VP. Our favorite place to play was Delta Downs in Vinton - few machines with high tables but effective Dec. 2007 all casinos with horse racing had to remove VP to meet La. state law. The truck stops complained that horse racing and VP were not both allowed since they could only have two types of gambling. VP, tables, slots and horse racing are considered separate types I believe in La. and casinos are limited to two types if I understand the law.
