Don't place bets

Post by zarina »

Has anyone ever booked a "Don't place" bet, if so where is the bet placed on the layout? I found very limited info about it. I originally found it in a book and am stumped about it.

Full disclosure, I'm no craps player, but I believe the opposite of a "place" bet would be a "lay" bet. You'd make it just like you make a "place" bet, put the chips down in a convenient location (of course you don't hand them directly over) and say "lay the 4," 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. You're betting a 7 will show before the number you lay, and the bet stays "on" until it loses or you take it down. I also believe there's a "vig" charge at least on winning "lay" bets of 5 percent.

I know that the odds are 4& 10 are 5 to 11, the 5 & 9 are 5 to 8, and the 6 & 8 are 4 to 5 and that the house advantage 3.03, 2.5 and 1.82% respectively, but other than that nothing...

The player would actually have to throw down $11 to get paid $5. If they went through the DC the number would have to roll twice to get paid This happened to me playing online on LINK REMOVED until I got sick of it .The don't place is just like a normal place bet throw it down any time and get paid, or lose in this case when the number rolls the first time.

I see.. So instead of risk the 7 or 11 they just by pass it and throw down a don't place bet.. hum... interesting.. but odds wise ... once your don't bar actually makes it past the 7 or 11 you as a player have a huge advantage against the house.. but i see how this can work.. just like if your playing at a 3x4x5x table it is stupid to play odds.. you may as well save your pass line for a place...

I believe don't pass is the bet with the best odds on the craps layout for the player, provided you can find a table that will let you bet against the shooter that is. Or are craps players not as supersititious as they're made out to be?

Also, it's always a good move from a return per unit bet standpoint to take maximum odds, whether you're backing up a pass, don't, place or lay bet. My feeling is it increases variance though. An interesting point is that from a net money won/loss standpoint, taking odds at any level does not change the amount of money you can expect to win or lose, just the return per unit . . .
