Do people always go for the Royal, even if keeping only two cards before drawing?

Only those who either don't understand math or who are deluded enough to believe luck will overcome math.
For every five card draw, there is one and only one mathematically correct play. Any other decision will simply add to your long term losses.I wish it weren't so.
Video poker and blackjack would be much more exciting if you could throw factors besides math into them, but to be a long term winner you have to play each hand optimizing
proper strategy.

Billy, what time frame are you using when you speak of long term winning and losing? Is this a 5 year plan, 10 year or forever plan.
Only those who either don't understand math or who are deluded enough to believe luck will overcome math
You can't always count on luck to overcome math. Conversely, video poker games do not always operate according to the math.  If they did everyone that is good at math would be a winner and sadly this is not the case. In my opinion, the best way to play video poker is to play for fun and not get carried away by tales of VP riches.  If it costs you a nickel or less to try for a $1,000 jackpot when the math says not to, why wouldn't you?   Is Bob Dancer going to call you stupid if you do?  No, unless you talk about it on this forum.  If you hit the royal as I have done numerous times, will you feel great about it?  You bet!

Most of the time I play the math and most of the time I lose! Some days I am lucky and most days I am not -- so I just play for fun and try to last as long as I can on the money I came with to the casino. Needless to say, the casinos like to see me coming!
