That seems to be my mode of operation here of late.  Either I'm not giving VP a good chance or I'm not playing correctly.  I do not think it is the later though I could make a good case for it in that I'm having to play short-pay machines!

Misery loves company.  Friday I made a casino visit with $500, and left three hours later with nada.  Almost all my play was on single line 9/6 DDB (quarters).  My only nice hit was a SF after an hour and a half.  Stuck with the same machine the whole session.  If I hadn't stopped playing for a minute to order a coffee that would have put me in a new RNG sequence and that SF might have been a RF!

3 hours on $500 quarters?  See, that's how I expected my vegas trip to work out but it kept going and going like the energizer bunny.  You must have been incredibly cold there. Hope you have the opposite experience before long.

Cold as ice.   One nice hit in the middle of a 3-hour session works out to back-to-back hour and a half dry spells.  Pretty bad for single line, but I've had worse.

I like the reasons to move machines based on the environment (view of TV, people etc.)  It makes me feel better about my own idiosyncracies.  There are lots ...  I try to stay away from chain smokers.  I find most drunks pretty offensive.  Sometimes people will have strange habits like doing "voodoo" on the VP machine to make it pay better ...  I feel like I'm watching the Jerry Springer show or something.  Couples telling each other how to play.  Folks swearing at the machine.  I have an aversion to people who constantly change games (from DDB, to JOB, to deuces wild etc.) every 3 hands or so.

I wonder what I do that makes people crazy?

Most folks are nice though.

Sounds like you're describing ME.  Where do you play?    One thing I don't do that you mentioned is swear at the machine.  Everyone knows that just gets the machine mad.

Nope,
California, Orange County to be exact.  I play mostly in South Cal unfortunately.  But Vegas is best when I can get there...

I am responding to an earlier message by OEJ...

Thanks for your feedback about switching machines and for each personal twist about changing machines.  For me,I have seen so many people either drop tons of money in to one machine without getting anything or get a good sized jackpot and dump it all back in.  Over the years playing VP I have observed many different pay cycles of machines in general.  I use the word cycle for lack of any better terminology.  The fact is even the most spectacular session on a machine will end even if you do not.  If I hit the royal or another jackpot such as 4AwK I will play the machine some more and some times much more.  But I will not drop the whole thing back down the #$@!hole if the machine is just sucking it down.  At the quarter level, $100 is the limit for a machine that is taking it in without giving it out.  Variety is the spice of life for me.  More times than not a change is good.  On the other hand, I probably have given up on machines too quickly.  I will never know because even if some lucky SOB jumps on and hits the Royal (which has happened) I would have never gotten that hand anyway.  MAN IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO GET THAT ONE THROUGH MY THICK SKULL!!  Even though I know the facts it still burns me up when that happens.

Anyway, you all can knock yourselves out any way you like.  Everone plays differently and it is their right.   I just played today at Pauma in San Diego and lost my beast of burden.  HAHA right.  I checked and I am still up for the year when I play by myself but when I play with the wife we are down about a grand for the year.  I am sure you all needed that info.

I guess it has something to do with continuous exposure to negative expectation machines...  Must be nice to live in Vegas but I doubt I will get the wife to move..

Are there male and female machines? How can one tell?
I bet my mentor knows the answer.
