Tomorrow I am going to the Tampa Hard Rock. Over Christmas week my wife and I will be in Biloxi staying at the Beau Rivage. If I make a profit at either place, I pay Federal Income tax on my winnings. By itemizing, I can offset my Federal taxes with my losses. The house edge in Tampa is about 1.2%. If I play big in Biloxi, the house edge is about the same only they hit me with a 3% State tax on all hand pays. They will take this tax out before I am paid and it can never be recovered. This makes the house edge in Biloxi at least 4.2% with perfect play. Should I stay home for Christmas? My wife has nearly recovered from her accident and we are both looking forward to this trip. Playing smaller in Mississippi is an intelligent decision. It lets us enjoy a comped vacation at a discount. All we have to do is control our coin-in.
I believe playing VP bigger puts you at a disadvantage even without the taxes. Your losses can easily build to the point where you must become extremely lucky to even break even. I would rather be down $1,000 playing quarter VP then down $100K playing $5 games. Of course there will always be players who need to play big in order to be entertained. I speak for myself and I don't need to.

Should you stay home for Christmas?
Obviously it's your choice, but what would your Grand kids answer?

Funny you should ask. Last Saturday night we had our annual family Christmas get together. Each year all the kids, grand kids, in laws and such meet and talk about what happened since our last meeting. The new great grand baby is walking now. She just discovered Yogurt. Here's a pic.
This year my wife and I will be married 53 years. We are still together because we never stopped being boy and girl friends. I still think of her as when I first met her in 1963. Romance is very important to us. We share the same interests and respect each other's opinions. Playing VP together works for us. Each casino vacation is like a mini honeymoon. We hit life's jackpot.

I do not believe the State tax hit you take is quite as severe as you've indicated. The 3% is on only hand pays, not everything. Nevertheless, it must be quite irritating to have to pay a state tax on a jackpot if your overall play results are negative.FloridaPhil wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 7:33 amIf I play big in Biloxi, the house edge is about the same only they hit me with a 3% State tax on all hand pays. These day I hardly ever play VP with anything bigger than quarters. The way odds keep dropping, I see no future in it State taxes or none.onemoretry wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 9:17 amI do not believe the State tax hit you take is quite as severe as you've indicated. My odds are constant. But so is my luck: bad.

I lose about 6 percent to the state of ct on gross winnings. Federal can be offset but not the state. That’s like taxing you on gross proceeds of a stock sale even if you lost your shirt on the transaction.

Does Connecticut have the highest State gambling taxes? Mississippi is the only State where we pay State taxes and it's 3%. Florida doesn't have state taxes....Yet. We recently came very close to electing a socialist governor. The election was so rigged it made the news. Thank God that didn't happen.olds442jetaway wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 5:36 pmI lose about 6 percent to the state of ct on gross winnings. Federal can be offset but not the state. Im not sure if Ct. is the highest but it could be. They will continue to do anything they can to get more votes. Bring them in give them free stuffand in effect buy their votes forever. When over half of the people in this country will never pay anything in income taxes like now, you have a guaranteed vote from almost all of them. How else could ct be one of the richest states in the coubtry, soak the residents, yet have one of the worst debts.

One guess who pays, when you have nearly 80 million households in this country who pay no income tax.
