What I'd (You) Would Like to See Discussed on The Recreational Forum

I only brought up our lousy year because I thought it was something to talk about that wouldn't be controversial. I guess I was wrong. I could say "Hello, isn't it a nice day?" and someone on this forum would find fault with it.

..... there is no need to say anything further on that subject.
Somehow, I don't believe that will stop you.

By the way Phil, I look forward to photos of your new family member no matter where it was born. I'm a real softy when it comes to animals who rely on us for everything. And to answer a few of OtaBill's questions......My casino drive is an hour away. I usually stay over. I go 3 times a week and once a week with the Mrs. We always eat together, but play separately. That way since we usually play different games anyway, I don't get into more trouble than I get into anyway by telling her what cards to hold. Percentage wise, she always does better than me. We almost always dine at the casino. We have good choices there, the biggest challenge is not overeating especially with the high sodium content in everything. I never tire of the casino or should I say....playing vp. I will probably be still working on my discipline the rest of my playing days.

The best thing I can offer is to not start any new posts on strategy. I'll assume everyone knows what's best for them. My own strategy has changed over the years. If someone asks a question, I will give them my answer. My answers may not be your answers.

Haven’t had much time to reply to and comment on the responses to my initial post. First, thanks Wildman and Olds for your comments related to some of the subjects I raised. Quite frankly I should have done so myself. So here goes. The smoke/health issue is very personal to me. Exposure to second hand smoke significantly contributed to the health issues my wife has suffered the last few years that have curtailed many activities we have enjoyed doing in the past. We always went to the casino together and usually played VP on the same bank proximate to one another. Our choice of casino depended on a variety of factors including the games available, entertainment acts, bingo, etc. It was pure entertainment. We talked with one another discussing our various hands, etc. No counting or keeping other statistics. Our sessions could last for hours on end. Because we live within 45 minutes of a number of casinos, we would go about once a week. Never overnight except for the 1 to 2 trips a year to Vegas for about 3 nights each (65-6 hour drive). Dining at the casino was sporadic given limited choices locally and the proximity to better choices nearby.

My thoughts on some of the other responses to my original post. The original response by BR was sarcastic and uncalled for (Fact free zone – read above). You want to comment on the subject fine, but I don’t appreciate dismissing what matters to me as irrelevant. Your life revolves around gambling, mine and other recreational players have other interests.

FP, I can relate to your wife’s accident impacting her and I am sure your VP play. Sorry about the loss of Katie. We know about the impact the passing of a pet has on our lives. Looks like you have an adorable replacement. We have 5 cats, all of whom we rescued, not from a shelter but from our backyard. One wandering in and we fed her before bringing her in. Thought she was lost but no one claimed her and she wasn’t chipped. At the time, folks were abandoning pets because of the housing crises. The other 4 were less than a week old. A feral gave birth in our yard and then disappeared. Something probably happened to her as they were emaciated. We brought them in, tried to find homes for them, and when we couldn’t kept them. Rescued but not from a shelter. Doris, Olds kudos to you as well.

Ted, I am confused you thought FP was slamming me. While I found FPs comment somewhat flippant, BR’s comment was much more offensive. At least FP discussed the impact of the health of his wife on her VP play. One question for you, awhile back in a comment on another post you said something to the effect that you did not find VP entertaining. I would like your view on why you consider it a recreational activity if it is not enjoyable.

It doesn't seem to matter who posts what on this forum, BR will make some kind of sarcastic mindless comment. At least Ted reads the entire post before he comments. I don't always understand Ted's questions, but I can tell he thinks before he types. To be honest, there isn't much we can discuss about VP on this forum that hasn't already been talked to death 100 times before.

Recreational video poker is about having a good time whatever that means to you. I live 90 minutes from my closest casino. I take the back roads and enjoy my drive through the country part of Florida. There is nothing on an expressway I want to see. When I get to the casino, I head directly to the single line Deuces Wild games. I play max coin quarters and it usually works out. I hit a quad deuce on every trip I made over the last month. Last week I hit two. I don't claim odds had anything to do with that. I've been lucky.

I am totally confused by members who seem to have no life outside of gambling. I'm sure they do, but they never mention it here. Do their wives ever go to the casino with them? Will their wives play a negative VP game? Do their wives read VP strategy books or are they like my wife who doesn't care? All she cares about are quad deuces and royals and she gets more than her share because she adjusts her strategy to make that happen. Long term results mean nothing to her.

I would love to talk with other players who enjoy VP as a couples activity. Are there any out there? I know Olds does. When we go to a casino resort on a mini honeymoon, video poker is not the most exciting activity.

There is nothing earth shaking about Recreational Video Poker. When it gets that serious, it starts being work and I've had enough of that in my life. Video poker the way we play it is a game. It's not for profit. We play it small enough where we don't care if we make or lose money. It's just an enjoyable way to spend some quality time together.

I love my wife. I like to see her smile. I don't want to see her grumbling about bad VP odds or making 4 cent mistakes. It's very easy to get caught up in the math of video poker and miss out on the enjoyment of playing the game without worry. Try it some time, you may like it.

OTA I took FP's 02/04 post as slamming you because his first post was on topic, as was most of the others. His 02/04 post went totally off course from anything related to video poker and I took that as him trying to hijack the thread away from your original intent.

As for the comment you may be attributing to me I don't recall it but my first guess would be that I said something along the lines that when I walk into a casino I do not think of video poker as entertainment but rather a money making opportunity. Players who go to be entertained most likely take more chances than I do when playing, I'd rather focus on winning and walking out a few dollars ahead.

I don't have anything against players who play for the entertainment value but that's not how I play. To each their own.

For the record though: I am a dog person through and through, having had a 160 pound Saint Bernard for just over 13 years. I do not wish ill will on cats but they aren't my thing.
