I learned to drive on an automatic. We had push button transmissions on the simulators we used in drivers ed but by 1976, pretty much all transmissions were just as they are today as far as gear placements.
So I never learned to drive a shift until I get hired to drive a van from Long Island to New Orleans. I was 19, taking a semester off from school and a friend of a friend who worked for the Military Sealift Command was being transferred from Bayonne to Nawlins and needed his van brought down.
No one mentioned it was a stick when it got dropped off at my Parents house and the guy was on a ship before I realized I couldn't drive it down there for him.
My Dad took me aside and told me I was missing the obvious solution. Learn to drive a shift and get the car there in 86 hours like I agreed.
To be continued.....

Last stick shift I had was a 1992 Acura Legend. Was fun to drive on suburban roads in NJ, but had to drive out to Long Island to visit friends and family regularly. With the stop and go traffic for 3 hours on the Belt Parkway and Staten Island Expressway, that got old in a hurry. Switched to an automatic quickly.
