97.06DW vs 97.02TDB?

The lighter side... playing for entertainment, less concerned about "the math."

I find it ironic that someone who claims to excel in math would protest because I choose to play the better game. Single coin dollar Deuces Wild is a better game than 5 coin quarter DW at the Tampa Hard Rock. This situation is common all over the country. It will remain that way until the casinos block off the coin buttons forcing us to bet 5 coins. Don't laugh, it's coming.

According to Billy, we can't do anything right. Even when we agree with him, we are subject to his wrath. If he knew half as much about video poker as he thinks he does, he wouldn't have time to post. He would be too busy making bank deposits.

The sad thing is that Phil actually believes this nonsense. At some point, debating math becomes nonsensical. Sadly, Phil passed that point long ago. My Father used to tell me that figures don't lie, but that liars figure. I never quite understood just what he meant until I joined here. Up is down, sideways is straight ahead and you are better off playing bad games than better ones. It's on the internet, so it must be true.
What's sad is you don't understand the purpose of this forum or why Recreational VP exists. The Recreational Forum is not about beating the casinos. If that is your goal, stay on the Strategy Forum where experts who make that claim can give you the answers you desperately want to hear.
In an effort to save space I culled Phil's post down to the area I wanted to target. Phil, when you post allegedly telling players how to lose less, aren't you too: making claims?

Billy thinks everyone should play video poker the same way for the same reason. He doesn't understand the concept of playing VP for entertainment. If he does, why does he care how I play VP with my own money?

When I play quarter VP in Tampa, I play 97% games or I don't play at all. The dollar game is a better game even at single coin. If I play max coin dollar VP, I could burn through $300 in 15 minutes. When I play max coin dollar VP $20 at a time, I am playing a 98.9% game. If I cash out a $250 run up, it pays me the same as an extra quarter quad deuce. If I hit a $1,000 quad deuce or a $4,000 royal, I add it to my bankroll. On some days I am able to stay with dollar play for a long time. This builds comps 4 times faster than playing quarters. It's a win win as far as I am concerned.

This is not how a professional plays video poker. I am not a professional player. I don't need profits from video poker to pay my bills. I don't want anyone else to pay my bills for me. All I want is to play VP all day with the $300 I put in my pocket, go home with at least some money and see a $1,000 or larger jackpot once in a while. The way I play this game delivers what I want.

My advice to Billy is to mind your own business and leave Recreational VP to the Recreational players.
Phil in your post above you speak of burning through $300.00 in 15 minutes playing max coin dollar play. Any seasoned player here knows that it takes a bigger bankroll than $300.00 to play max coin dollar play.

And your statement that playing single dollar coin in "builds comps 4 times faster than playing quarters." You obviously mean to compare single coin dollar play vs. single coin quarter play, right? Not like right above it where you compare single coin dollar play vs. "the same as an extra quarter quad deuce."

I am not on this forum to tell people how to play.

If you have access to positive VP games, can play computer perfect forever and have a bankroll equal to 4-6 royals, ignore my advice and play like the experts tell you. If you don't, try playing my way for a few months and tell us how you like it. Keep this in mind, there is no difference in the value of a $250 single coin dollar royal flush and a $250 max coin quarter quad deuce.
Phil,

There is a conflict here. It looks to me like you are telling people how to play when you said you do not.

Also, maybe some people were fine playing pennies, nickles, or dimes. Now you are encouraging them to play $1 or $5 a hand. Maybe they had their gambling under control and were keeping their bets very small but are seeing the hundreds or thousands of dollars that you made using your method so they try it next time they go to the casino. Who is responsible for their actions and potential losses over the months that they try your method?

Let's keep this light. I have a question. Do you think Bob Dancer goes to the casino to be entertained?

I think by now he is sick of casinos. He goes there for one reason, to make money. He may be playing VP. He may be consulting. He may be teaching. He may be promoting something so he can make more money. Having fun? I doubt it. He probably enjoys taking a cruise or dancing with his wife more than watching someone blow smoke rings while he feeds money into a slot machine. I would be very much surprised if he told us he gets up on a Tuesday morning and drives an hour and a half to play 97% quarter video poker games like I do.

So why would a player who goes to the casino to be entertained play VP the same way as someone who goes there to work? If the only reason you go to the casino is to make money, you are a professional player. Your motivations are not the same as mine. The games you play and the way you play them are not the same.

I want my money to last all day. If I had positive games to play, this would easy. I would play those games because they allow me to play more hands. I would adjust my bankroll to fit the time required. The games most of us play are negative. The math is different on these games. To stretch my money, I play the best game with the lowest variance I have in the denomination I am comfortable with. That game in my casino is single coin dollars.

I want something else when I go to the casino. I want to go home with some money left. I do this by setting low cash out limits and sticking to them. This won't make me a profit. It makes me feel better as it reduces the number of total wipe out days.

Thirdly, I want a chance at a $1,000 or more jackpot. I don't want to pay more for it than it's worth to me. I could play $25 a hand and see them all day long. At my casino those games are still negative, so all I would do is increase my losses. To make this happen, I take a $20 pot shot on the bigger machines a few times a day. The worse that can happen is I throw away a little money. If losing $100 is a big deal to you, you shouldn't be doing this. The best thing that can happen is I win some money. This keeps me out of the high limit room and satisfies my desire to "hit it big".

How I play video poker is not necessarily how you should play because everything about me is different. We all shouldn't play like Bob Dancer either. Our skills are different, our games are different, our tolerance and discipline is different and our goals are different. What Bob Dancer teaches is how to beat the casino. I'm not trying to beat the casino. All I want out of video poker is a day of relaxation, to be entertained for a day and to come home with some money. Every now and then I want to cash a ticket for $1,000. I get what I want by playing the way I do.

The problem with this forum when I came here is that discussions of Recreational VP play were not tolerated. I found this strange as most VP players are like me, not Bob Dancer. I learned a lot from him over the years. It didn't make me want to be or play like him. We have a Recreational Forum so players can discuss how they like to be entertained. Making money playing video poker and being entertained by it are not always the same thing.

I like to do both, but somehow being entertained happens so much more often than making money. That said, I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t up ten percent of bankroll for the session T some point. It usually happens early on. I can’t make ten percent a day in investments not even close to ten percent in a year. So why can’t I quit at that ten percent up point? That’s where the entertainment factor takes over and the love of just playing and enjoying the rest of the casino stuff kicks in.

I’m working on a self discipline call it system if you like that forces you to keep your bets low if you are even or better. I realize I’m up against the Royal penalty, but if I can get that ine quarter macnine that is 800 for bet one it will help. I will use joker kings as an example, but my rules would be the same for deuces or bonus deuces. Not going to use it on job cause iver the years I have had way too many quadless sessions and of course many months of Royalless sessions. For joker kings, I will bet just a quarter until I have lost a net of 17 quarters which is what a quad pays. Then I will bet 2 quarters until I have lost 34 more quarters. If at any time, I have lost less than 17 quarters I will be at bet one. If I have to go to bet 3 so be it and the progression will continue up and down. I can’t see my bets getting too high playing this way. It doesn’t guarantee a win but i will still have the thrill if hitting something better than a quad at a slightly higher bet. I have practiced it on wolf vp and it is fun. First real session test is tonight up at Mihegan Sun. I’m not giing to let the 1040 tax changes screw me any more with the w2 gs. It cost me a bundle for 2018 cause I an forced to itemize to write off the gambling losses, but not counting them I couldnt come close to the double standard deduction in my other itemized deductions. The loss of your personal exemptions and the over 65 gift sucks too. I knew this was going to happen way in advance for 2018, but didn’t change my way of betting in time. That’s my fault. I knew about the changes before the ink was dry on the tax package. I study that stuff constantly cause one never knows what they are going to slip in there. The 10k cap on deducting state and local taxes just destroyed me this year. Cost me a cool 10 to 15k in lost deductions. So next year I will have little to no w2gs and just take the standard deduction. I will probably save lots of money, the state and fed tax will go way down and the casino will be a big loser as well. Every month their profits are shrinking and there appears to be no end in sight to that. Oh well they did it to themselves imo.

The new tax law is going to change a lot of minds on how they play VP. What good is beating yourself up to play a high denomination positive game if the State and Federal Government are cutting into your action? Never made much sense to me.

We are all searching for the perfect VP game. One where we always win long term, we hit huge jackpots and the casino showers us with free stuff. I read about those games. Haven't seen one yet.

I think we need different strategies depending upon what the casino offers. Crappy tables? Play single coin. Decent games? I'll take my chances with max coins. I don't mind paying to play, I don't want to be robbed. Right now I'm happy with the way things are going. Sure, I would like to see positive VP come to Florida. I'm won't be holding my breath.

Phil, the better paytable at the Hard Rock is available at the .50 denom. Why not play .50 at max coin?
