Why do you play VP? - Do you go solo or with your significant other or someone else.

The lighter side... playing for entertainment, less concerned about "the math."

One day years ago I was playing single coin VP in a long row of machines. A lady down from me said in a voice loud enough for me to hear, "Single coin players mess things up for the other players". I asked her how that could be possible? She said single coin players hit the jackpots leaving fewer for the max coin players. This was the first time I had heard this logic. This is definitely not the case, but there was no convincing her.

Like all superstitions, there was a tiny bit of truth in this one. Single coin players can play more hands with the same money, which means they hit more jackpots. Their jackpots are smaller of course. I don't believe this reduces the number of jackpots for anyone else.

What I am wondering is why would Phil say that was a superstition?

I like the okey dokey response. My favorite os Oooooooook! In the long run though, multiline play will produce the same number of jackpots for the same coin in unless I’m missing something.

The superstition was the idea that the machine next to you can affect your machine. The part about single coin players being able to play more hands with their money is not. If you want to see a ton of jackpots, take your normal bankroll and play single coin quarters all day. You won't run out of money.

Years ago I took the bus to the Hard Rock. It gets to the casino around 9:30 AM and leaves at 3:00 PM. If you play like I do, that's 5 1/2 hours of video poker. The DDB odds were 8/5. The potential for a big loss was substantial. Not wanting to drop $600 into the casino's coffer, I played single coin quarters all day. That day I hit more quad aces than I ever had before or since. Quads were popping up everywhere. No royal. At the end of the day, I had broken even. If I had played max coins, I may have hit a royal and made some money. It was no surprise that it didn't happen.

If you are going to play 96-97% video poker games you are paying the casino to play those games. You can pay a lot or you can pay a little. It's your choice.

But where in your post did you write anything about the machine next to you? And who's superstition it was?

When someone hits a jackpot, it actually affects the entire bank of machines. That bank will work collectively together to recover any jackpot hit. Dontcha hate it when this happens? :o

Over the years I've had people try to strike up a conversation sitting next to me. I answer a few questions, but don't give advice. I don't like hearing that was "my" jackpot when they just moved from that machine. Do they think you should split the win with them? No such chance. I've had that happen to me too. I try to smile and say congratulations - but it doesn't sound convincing through gritted teeth.

I do think the banks are connected, right up until it proves my thinking wrong.

I don't need the company driving to the closest casino - because it's about 10 minutes away. I also don't like to leave after hitting a nice payout less than 15 minutes after arriving.

My first royal flush was on a progressive machine at the Wynn in Las Vegas. I haven't hit another progressive since. I take that back - I did get a royal flush on a $5 machine at Bellagio, but with only 2 coins. The attendant ran over and then said it was too bad I wasn't playing max. It was $2K I didn't have a minute ago - I was ok with it then. Of course now I think back and kick myself.

I haven't had a royal flush in so long I don't remember what they look like. But I do wish royals for everyone. Perhaps that might include me.
