What's the value of comps? Please educate me.

Did you hit any jackpots? Did you get a great comp? We all want to know!

Thanks for the tip Bob. Even though I cannot travel now due to my dad’s health issues, the information is appreciated. Some day, the wife and I will get out that way. I have been to Tahoe, but never Vegas or nearby. We hit Tahoe back in 98 when we went out for my sister’s wedding. It is only just over 3 hours from Sonoma. Harrah’s was nice and they picked up my tab. Like you say abd I said in another post, each to his own. I for one never get tired of staying over at a casino or sampling their free food. These days, watching calories and sodium though one has to be careful. I enjoy the breakfast buffets the most. Luckily, at the Soar level at Mohegan Sun I get 2 free dinners 24/7 or 3 breakfasts. I enjoy giving them to others mostly non or once in awhile gamblers as well

We travel a lot, but don't choose a holiday destination based on whether it has a casino. Lucky for us, we don't want to go to Biloxi, Joliet, or St. Louis. We maximized creative accumulation of miles and points for decades, LONG before a certain gambling forum jumped on the travel bandwagon with their blog. So, it's not that we "NEVER" go out of town, but we visit fabulous destinations like Bora Bora and Prague (First Class) for nothing more than taxes and fees. Sorry, no casinos there.

Mr. Dancer and others who consider these things please educate me. I have learned the casino systems pretty well and always try to maximize my benefits but a discussion of how you determine such values would help me. What I'm interested in is how do you determine the value of your comps to determine if you beat the house, had a winning year, etc.
Larry, beating the house can be hard without using advantage play. I beat the casino out right playing there games and include free play and promotions that are cash or free play. For Recreational Player it's much harder.

One could add gas cards into there total since you will spend them off site. As far as adding rooms, concert tickets, gifts, I would say if you would be willing to pay cash out of pocket for any of them you could add what ever fare value one might put on the free comp.

Really it's up to how you feel about the free comp. Is it something you wanted or needed you might then put a value on it. I don't put a value on the freebie comps just call them icing on my cake. For a rec player adding in all the goodies can make the year look and feel better since it is a reward for your play.

In the month of January 2020 I picked up $315.00 worth of gas cards from Harrah's and Hollywood casinos. Also this month I got a Eureka Power Speed Upright vacuum cleaner which I will be picking up next month.

When I went to Harrah's last Saturday to pick up some gas cards I decided to play for a bit and hit a .25 royal and left up $1,200.00 after earning about 1,100 tier credits. This also earned me the 1,000 tier credit bonus.

Last December I got a $150.00 Southwest Airlines gift card.

So yes, I think gift cards have some value and are not trinkets. But neither is a Eureka vacuum cleaner either.....

i have seen more than my fair share of friends totally shoot themselves in the foot chasing so called comps and end up losing more than they planned. Casino management knows its target. So many people simply stink at math and have little or no self control. And when you encounter someone who maintains that they are a significant long term winner you are actually talking to a gambling addict. Casinos today do not hand out comps to people who take home more cash than they put in its that simple....if you have a winning month or even two winning months you might still receive some basic standard comps, but if your so called good fortune continues and you keep winning more cash than you shove in your comps will eventually be stopped until you start losing again. Now if you happen to be a high roller whale who plays table games and is wealthy this does not necessarily apply as casinos will indulge you for longer periods until you give it back, but even here if you somehow keep beating the casinos at blackjack or baccarat you will eventually be invited to play elsewhere!

If you try playing without your card that may help a little if you manage to hit some non-taxable jackpots but that's not sustainable either.

I STRONGLY disagree with that sentence.

You could be both a long term winner and an addict.
