Let's talk about Buffet openings

Post by Eduardo »

Yes we all want to safely gamble again one day. But what about the buffet?

Surely they will open in some fashion before this virus is all "over with," perhaps requiring masks in line and having better sneeze guards over the food? Or maybe employees will serve everything as you go down the line and you collect your plate at the end?

Any other thoughts on how we can get this great culinary institution back in action and what the obstacles are?

i would think that they would serve at the buffet.i don't think they are going to allow the customers to touch the serving utensils with their bare hands.

I was only thinking about faces, not hands. But you are definitely right.

I have a friend whose parents own an all-you-can-eat Chinese Buffet. We have had a number of brainstorming sessions over the phone about how they can reopen. They plan on a cafeteria style format with employees doing the serving. Their setup is quite small with a single line and less than a dozen items. It does not appear feasible for large Vegas casino buffets with different sections and massive crowds. The logistics would be mind-boggling. Perhaps each section could be a separate mini cafeteria. Hopefully, someone will be able to develop a viable concept.

Well, the crowds are definitely the first thing to go. There will be limited occupancy seating for a long while I think. So servers in each area may be possible.

gotta agree with you about amphora club. when i used to go there, many years ago, the buffet was terrific. one of the best things they did was put smaller amounts in the serving containers. when buffets pile the containers sky high, things like fish get overcooked in the warming trays.

Agreed. Small portion food trays are the best. The only way this is going to work if it’s going to work at all is to have the employees serve you and have absolutely no way germs from your mouth could get through any openings and into the food. Before this virus the standard buffet of course would have contaminated utensils and the slanted glass partitions only partly covered the food. Sometimes you had to reach way in or around to get some of the things and you would almost be hanging over the food itself. That’s all going to be history forever now. The breakfast buffets at Mohegan sun were phenomenal and even had stations where they made a custom omelette for you if you liked. They were only $10 with a players card, free for me with the soar card that I had and certain cards and mine came with an alcohol beverage besides as many other beverages as you would like. If I was having a late breakfast I particularly liked the bloody Mary’s with a couple of olives. Anyway we look at it things will never be the same.

 I will personally make sure the Bloody Mary’s are the same even if I have to open a bottle of Titos in my car myself and make them. In the old days, you were allowed to walk into the buffet drink in hand Same getting into elevators going up to the rooms unless it was more than a half hour after last call. As far as I know, except for going into concerts, there were no restrictions on when or where you walked around with your drink. I have to wonder if that will change and what are they going to do with the contaminated smoke from other people’s lungs? I would take a 1 percent hit on paytables uf they ended smoking in casinos. They better not come up with a mask for smokers with a built in smoke inhale and exhale system. It could be done. That is the sick bad part.
