Our shuttle bus driver from the airport said "WELCOME to VEGAS" and "I have to warn you about the $200 fine for jay walking. Cross only at cross walks and signal light!" on Dec 29, 07. He sounded sincere. I realize this is how rumors get started, asked a couple of people who worked in Vegas about this new fine and they had not heard of it. Every time we are in Vegas, we do hear sirens and also media reports about pedestrians getting hit by cars. Driver said this new law has been in effect for about four months. His cousin is on the police force and that is how he heard about it. Plain clothes officers hand out tickets on the spot, he said. Even if his warning is not a law, or not enforced,  it serves as a reminder for us to be extra careful around Vegas streets. I'm sure it makes his work easier if he does not have to wait in traffic for yet another tourist to be scraped up off the pavement. How long can you play VP on $200. That fine could make a major dent in one's bankroll! Happy day!

Shadowman, any knowledge on this new law/fine? I've always understood jaywalking to be illegal but just because everyone does it. . . .
Yikes! 2 bills would dent my bankroll if it's fact!

Nope, I don't walk around much so I've ignored the various articles about it. However, I still see many jaywalkers ... many are obviously locals.

RE: duckhunter and Vegas safety. ANY where you are in the world, you really have to have your guard up, and especially so where people come with $ to play! Those areas attract professional pick pockets among others. A high school teacher knew to watch his wallet in Vegas and still it was stolen out of his pocket. Someone, probably female, on a very crowded bus had my husband's wallet half way out of his pocket as we hopped off the bus. His wallet was so wedged in his pocket one almost needed pliers to get it out! I had a cast removed from my broken leg a few days early to hit Vegas. My husband was concerned for me getting off the bus okay, especially since I said OUCH as I stepped off the bus and he was trying to help me. A crowded bus taking off would probably be a good spot for a pick pocket to succeed. Save your expensive luggage, jewelry etc. for another vacation site or leave it at home. It's an art to win a few grand and walk down the strip trying to look poor and dejected when you feel like dancing and singing praise to the gods. Frugal Gambler author Jean Scott had her purse stolen at a casino. Someone had spilled coins behind her for distraction before TITO and she knew when she turned back to her machine her purse would be missing, but how? Someone had lifted the plexiglass that separated her machine from the one behind hers and her purse had been next to her machine. A team also absconded with and cashed in a $600 ticket out of her machine. One hit cash out, her end machine made no noise for the ticket and another picked it up. She had turned to save the seat next to her for Brad. These stories were in Frugal Fridays that she has recently ceased to write. Last time I checked, her interesting and useful columns were still on line. The whistle I carry would probably meet with the same apathy that car alarms receive. Airlines confiscated tiny Swiss army knife I forgot was hiding in my carry on cosmetic bag, for in state travel, like a good luck charm. Lucky for me he was an understanding TSA agent and I did not look too much like a terrorist that day.

Duckhunter: alittle common sense goes a long way. Every city has it's good or bad spots. Excersize the common sense and you'll be fine. MarieM, did you follow up on that jaywalking fine? I sent an E-mail to LVPD but so far no response.Let us know your findings.

Thanks for taking the time to post the information.  I had also read the article about Jean Scott.  Its getting bad everywhere and all areas have bad places.   I live in a nice neighborhood but about 5 miles down the road when you cross the bridge in this area it would be a good idea to have a gun, and if your family is with you two guns.  I now go out to the interstate and take it to work.  Its like the country has lost it moral compass. (but thats another post) thanks again.
