Vegas in general

Post by duckhunter »

I have several questions about the VP in Vegas and the overall saftey of the area.  We are in Ms and near Tunica and Vicksburg.   The Casinos in Tunica (which is really in Robertsonville)are in the middle of the cotton fields and rice, and we beleive that this one of the reasons for the little crime or the area.  Almost all the talk about vegas is about the good payback or play (correct play tables) on the strip, but almost always it said that people dont feel safe.  Is it really that bad?  Also the paytables, all the casinos here have lowered the paytables where their is almost no playable games, is that happing their, could you at the quarter level stay half way even.  Last question the money, we play and I figure most of you play, we dont pay for the buffets or the rooms here is it that had to get food or rooms.

Duckhunter,    If you are walking around Memphis, no doubt there are areas you feel safe in (or relatively safe) and areas in which you would avoid at all costs! It's the same in Las Vegas.  In all of the Major Properties on the Strip, you should have no fears.  When you are walking on the sidewalks between properties with large crowds also sharing those same sidewalks, you will be safe enough.  If you start walking through unlit areas or areas where there do not seem to be many if any people, I'd be cautious!  Just use some common sense when moving around like you would anywhere. With that said, there are definitely places to be very cautious.  For instance, if you are in Downtown Las Vegas on Fremont at midnight or 1am and decide to walk down to El Cortez, I'd be very careful.  I'd feel a lot more comfortable going that route either in a car or walking with a group consisting of some rather large bodyguards <LOL>There are some casinos located off Strip that I might hesitate to frequent, especially at night but again, it's all a matter of doing ONLY what you feel comfortable doing. As for paytables....there are good paytables and there are not so good paytables in Las Vegas.  You can spend a lot of time scouting on your own to find the good ones, or you can check sites like vpFree to get information that others have posted.Meals and Comps...generally speaking, you will get about 1/2 the comp rate for playing VP in Vegas Casinos that those casinos give for playing slots.  Player's Club Points can usually be exchanged for meals at the establishment's buffets.  Rooms are about the same though once you have signed up in the Player's Club and given them some action, you will most likely receive offers each month that include free or discounted rooms.

I've been through some rather seedy areas of Clark Co. but never have I felt carrying a sidearm would make a difference. Better to avoid the area than invite more trouble.

Thanks for the information, We have thought about moving out to vegas and the advice is appreciated.  On Memphis, on my Birthday I used to make my kid go out to eat with me and to the show, there is a large screen special seating in Memphis (40'X70') at the Peabody where the ducks are(mallards ride the elevator down and go into the hotel's water fountain), after seeing all the people standing around on the street I decided not to go their anymore.  Besides kids are big out of college and you have to pass the Casino turn off and they like to go too.  thanks again for the advice.

According to VPFree the Sheraton has the best VP in Tunica. I'm not sure where you play at now but it might be worth a scouting trip. Here's some links that may be helpful,

Mike is right on with his comments. There is a big change in the atmosphere once you venture out of downtown on foot.  A short drive down Fremont or LV Blvd and you can see why.

Another note of concern regarding handguns.  The handgun laws in Las Vegas are much more lenient than they are in California(where I am from).  A concealed weapons permit is much easier to get.  This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it.  Even though I am a handgun owner, I think this availablility and accessability to firearms makes the area more dangerous overall.

I am very careful when I am on foot in Vegas in any area away from the crowded tourist areas.

Also, I think the time you venture out is all important. I've never had any problems but I'm never out between 6PM and 4AM. I think the rest of the time is much safer. Of course, I stay away from the bad parts of town too.

So much depends on where you are.  My wife and I spend most of our time either on Fremont or in one of the Local's casinos.  Never EVER had any problems.  Well, I have been propositioned a couple of times and have been hit up for spare change.Fremont St is an oasis in the middle of a very bad part of Clark County I think.  Stay under the canopy and I don't think you would have problem any time day or night.  We haven't.  They are working on making that stretch down to the Tez safe.  I've heard rummors for years that they are going to stretch the canopy all the way down there.  The fact is that with remodeling, the Tez is as nice as most of the casinos on Fremont as as far as table games go, it is probably The Best.  With Dancer putting on "classes" at the Tez, I'm thinking that those bicycle cops are going tohave to extend their territory! But, I wouldn't set foot OFF of Fremont at all at night and would think several times about doing it during the day.  The exception is walking through Las Vegas Club, crossing the Ogden intersection into the California Club and taking the skywalk over to Main Street Station.

I try to always park at the top of any parking garage at the locals casinos because  better lighting, less crowded , and ease of finding my car.  I am frequently hitting different casinos at all hours. It is amazing to me that people will circle around for several minutes on the bottom level of a garage looking for a parking spot. It takes only a few seconds many places to go to the top and park right at an entrance.
