9-11

Post by marie meijer »

With all due respect and sympathies for the tragic events of 9-11, it was also my husband's golf day. He leaves early, I do my thing to keep from missing him too much and usually am back before he returns. "To our American visitors, they are going to close the bridge" came the announcement on the P A system at Prince Edward Casino, just over and under the Blue Water Bridge, in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. I cashed out, ran slowly by the cashier and raced to my car. I joined the stand-still traffic jam waiting to cross the bridge back to the US. Of course, I had no way of imagining what was happening until the radio reports but that announcement served it's purpose! I wondered how many days I would have to spend in Canada. As I glanced at others in line, their faces reflected the feelings of disbelief and apprehension and so many more emotions, that I was feeling, as we were all receiving the terrible news. It must have taken several hours to get across the bridge that day, as I was several hours later getting home than I had intended to be. When I finally reached an immigration officer, I mentioned the latest news I had just heard on the radio to help clue her in. She numbly said "It doesn't sound good", as an understatement! As far as I know, they never actually closed the bridge but it seemed as if half the people in Canada were trying to cross at the same time! Once, finally over the bridge, it was clear sailing and a perfect day, weather wise. The drive home was smooth, aside from listening to the breaking, horrifying news, non stop. As soon as I arrived home, we watched the news broadcasts. My husband casually asked, "Where were you? Did you go to Windsor?" "NO, I did not go to Windsor!" I replied truthfully.  He knew I was mildly phobic about driving across huge bridges and he never mentioned Sarnia. (I was almost over that silly bridge phobia when a Hugo bounced off the five mile long Mackinac Bridge and the driver drowned.) Which casino were YOU in, on 9-11?

Marie-I was at work in Manhattan. My coworker calls up to say she will be late there is a ton of traffic on the bridge cause  everyone is watching the  movie they must be filming by the towers! It was a scary day. My husband does a lot of business at the towers so i called him immediately-he was in the office thank God. Then my stepson is EMS (his wife was due to give birth any minute) and was there when the 2nd tower fell. He still goes for therapy for post traumatic stress syndrome-he saw those people that jumped from the buildings and he says-yes you do scream on the way down. It was scary going to work for almost a year. I am finally 95% back to normal.

Hi Boopsahoy, Congratulations on your recovery and what a heavy experience for all of you and everyone else! Sometimes it really helps to share with others a traumatic experience as part of the healing process. My son was on a business assignment in Canada at the time. He was totally overwhelmed by the outpouring of sympathy, concern and many other emotions expressed by Canadians when he was trying to comprehend the impossible situation. They could not have been kinder or more consoling. A friend's son, a pilot, was moved beyond words when he visited ground zero. That was an experience he will never forget, as well. We all share your pain and will always remember that day on many levels.

We had just arrived home 3 hours prior from a weekend @ Sams Town and breakfast at the Omelet House! We were absolutely horrified!

Working from home in Wichita, Kansas.  Glued to the TV for days after that.  Even seeing the unfolding horror in live broadcasts, I couldn't believe it was really happening.

My sympathies go out to you and to those who lost on 9/11.  Your mom DID have an impact on this world...at a minimum through you and your words, on this forum and elsewhere.  I recall a modification to the oft used aphorism that seems appropriate here: "Forgive...but never forget."  Even the first part is often hard to do.

New2vp, Thanks for the very appropriate words of comfort to Benford's Law. I believe those who said "move on" meant well and were trying to help, but unsure how to best do so.  We all need to remember the good times and focus on cherishing the memories. Most of us are not rich and famous and will command very little space when we exit. However, our lives, by word and action, have touched countless others. Benford's Law has impacted all of us reading this forum, encouraging us to appreciate when life is treating us well. Because of your entry, be assured, we are all going to strive to be more conscientious when on the road!
