practice software vs real life

Post by mschaching »

Purchased Bob Dancers software.. Been practicing JOB, Bonus, Deuces Wild.. Pretty comfortable up to intermediate level... Can I expect to win in real life Not knowing penalty cards etc? And what are VP machines playing at? I notice that in the practice session you hardly get pairs. thanx

I assume your referring to VPfW. You should double check to see what level you are playing at. The beginner level is NOT random. You should see pairs quite often at random VP machines.

Now, as for casinos. Your results will depend on the games you play and how well you play them. In most positive games you willl not need to know the penalty cards but knowing a few can't hurt. Try to learn the basic game first and then move to penalty cards when you have the game down cold. Your results will vary considerably every session but will approach the games payback over time by following the correct strategy.

Keep in mind that there is no such thing as hot or cold machines. Your results will vary because that is exactly what happens with random events.

Yes, in VPW, make sure in the "Training Style" menu,  under "Level of Difficulty" you set it to "Mixed."  Then you should receive hands in a fashion similar to the casino.Otherwise, the game will test you on hands exclusively of the difficulty level that you have selected.

Say what? No such thing as hot or cold machines you got to be kidding. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to know better than this. But for those of you who can't tell the difference I will enlighten you.

If you win money on the machine its "HOT"!
If you lose money on the machine its"COLD"!

I'll use my favorite analogy ... again. If a basketball player hits 7-8 3 pointers in one game and 1-8 in the next game is it because the basketball was "hot" in the first game? Of course not, that would be silly. The truth is, the same holds true in VP. The machine has ALL the good and bad hands available whenever you play. Some day you are "hot" and hit those good hands while other days you are "cold" and can't hit a thing. The machine is not hitting the deal button, it is the player. The machine is not hold or cold, the player is. This is standard behavior for weighted random events.

Don't get me wrong, I'm as guilty as the next guy ... swearing at the machines. I just know deep inside that they are innocent. However, I'd sound strange swearing at myself all the time.

What Shadow means is that on a "cold" machine your next hand is not destined a loser.  Same EV for every single hand.

That's right.

Today was a good example playing quarters. I started out extremely hot and was up $300 within 1/2 hour. I followed this by losing $200 in less than an hour. After playing even for a while, I got a few more good hits to win another $300 in an hour.  All of this was on the same machine. Like I said earlier, this is typical of weighted random events.

You can be "hot" and still lose money, depending on how you define "hot".  You can have a session above the ER for a given game and still finish in the red, say 99.5% for 9/6 DDB (98.98% ER).  That qualifies as hot, doesn't it?
