Re: Vegas trip ideas.
Correct Marie! Short trips like Mt Charleston, Hoover(Boulder) Dam, Red Rock Canyon and Valley of the Fires all a short distance from LV. Please don't be discouraged, just advised and prepared for adversity. Most of all, HAVE FUN!

rfonlymama is right: Hoover Dam IS amazing and there is a visitors center. However, since that infamous date, elevator to the base tour is unfortunately no longer available. Log on to Hoover Dam. Several casinos offer free day bus trip to Laughlin including buffet. Nice way to check out some ten casinos to consider for another trip. We have enjoyed that hotter casino location - weather-wise, on the beautiful Colorado River. Side trips to nearby Mt Charleston, Death Valley and sensational Yosemite are also great.
Not contradicting you Marie. I had "your" experience back in 2004.How "current" is your information Marie? We went in October or November last year and my brother-in-law took the tour and talked as though they had "relaxed" the security somewhat. He really enjoyed the tour. When I went there, we just drove across the dam into Arizona and turned around and came back.

Thanks for the correction, MikeA. It appears at least some of the power plant tour is open once again. One site notes the busy season is spring break and late May through early Sept. and the first two tours of the day are the least crowded. If anyone plans on a visit to Hoover Dam, log on to the web sites for information. Shad A, Orange, CA has interesting post 11/13/2006 re modified dam tour from one he remembered: http://www.yelp.com/biz/hoover-dam-disc ... ulder-city

Trip is off until May. We have decided to cancel because its obvious there would be a better time to go for my first trip to Vegas. No sense in throwing money away I'm sure it will still be there in a few months.

Pokherguy. you will not regret putting your vacation off. Vegas is miserable during holidays. There is enough with traffic, fares and lines as it is and to add a holiday on top of it is too much for me. My wife and I have a tradition of going to Vegas for New years because that is when I proposed to her 5 years ago during the countdown. Nice back then but after the crowds last year we are rethinking this occasion.
I always enjoy my trips to Vegas during off times much more. It is so much nicer there during the week than on weekends or holidays.

OK Pokeherguy, it might be a good decision on your part to postpone your visit, keep in mind May is busy with Cinco de Mayo(May 5) and Memorial day at the end of the month. In between may be ideal as LV is not too hot then. The place is always busy, just pick a less busier time to visit.

Check out these very cool pix of Hoover Dam! These might inspire you to go there or NOT. It probably would depend on the prevailing fickle attitudes of the videopoker gods whether one takes a breather and goes sightseeing. http://c1b.com/hooverdam.htm click on yellow PHOTO GALLERY 1 and then HOOVER DAM HARD HAT TOUR (Do NOT click on "click here" it's unrelated advertising.) After all the discussion on avoiding Vegas during spring break, we are off to Reno, courtesy of Harrahs. Never mind, it's a done deal and we do NOT want your advice this time!

I went this year on the 1st and it turned out to be very much a slack time, particularly re flight loads. Not there for the EVE, which was great by me. But still the same day you finished the kiss, right?

There is always the "Damn" Dam tour on the movie Vegas Vacation. If you want an idea what the tour is all about you can rent the movie!
