Against all odds

Post by kjoh »

Playing at the Argosy in KC a few days ago.  I was close to my $500 in two
hour limit that MO. enforces so decided to play nickels DDB 20 at a pop..The guy
next to me held a QJ and drew the AK10 for an $800 royal...Within 20 min. he
again held the QJ in the same position from L to R and again drew the AK10 in the same position for
another $800.  Now what are the odds of That....I on the other hand got a back
ache, a stiff neck and won nothing...

How does the casino know when you've reached your "limit"?

Yes it was the same suite.  It was an identical Royal in dimonds.....In Mo. you have to play with your card and it tracks how much you've spent.  You can't even walk into a casino without having your card checked.  I think we are the only state who still has this type of control...When you get to $400 within the two hours you have to call a slot person and have them approve the last $100.  Really frustrating if you are playing $$ or just have a few hours to play.

Is that $500 in bills actually put in the machine...or $500 played though?  I'd be done in about 30 minutes if it was dollars played through.

I know my daughter drove to St Louis and couldn't even get in the parking lot with out a player's card, which she didn't have yet. They could at least let you know that when you book a room.

The casino in Mo. that is close to used to do the same thing.. I have no idea if they still do because I haven't been back. I do remember that you had to get a players card before you could play any game in the casino. After you got the players card you recieved a card and you could go to the cash cage and purchase tokens if you were playing slots or VP and they would punch your card in accordance to how many $$$ worth of tokens you bought. When you reached $500 you had to wait until the next session before you could get another card and start over again. Dumbest thing I have ever seen. There were lots of people just sitting around waiting for the next session to begin so they could get more money. The only person I know that plays there on a regular basis always brings his wife along (who doen't play) so she can get money if he runs out. We were playing roulette and found out the max $$$ amount you could bet on a number was $5.

I am not positive how MO determines the "loss" but I am quite sure it is based on the amount that you have bought in with.  For SURE that is the way it works on the table games.  You could win and lose $10,000 in a two hour period, but you would only be able to buy $500 in chips during any 2-hour period.I don't know what would happen on the machines since they have nothing in the KC casinos that I play at that warrant anything other than a casual glance or maybe nickel play.  For instance, I don't now what alarms the membership card that HAS to be inserted in order to play, would raise if you pulled your credits off on to a TITO slip any time you accumulated 100 credits and inserted another $100 bill.  Maybe once you had bought in on a machine with cash up to $500 in a 2-hour period, and got to zero credits, you might have to start using the TITO slips to play instead of cash.  I just don't know since I haven't played for those amounts up there (I'm from Wichita, KS).

Being from Calif., I'm unfamiliar. Is this some ploy to slow or prevent gambling addiction? What about the players who do have means to play at a much higher denomination than the average OEJ? Are they allowed a higher ante/ play limit? Sounds foolish and antiquated!

I can only go by the one near my location because its the only Mo. casino I have been to. Casino is a loose term when refering to this place. Its tiny to say the least. If I'm not mistaken the max bet on games such as blackjack, let it ride, three card poker and other table games have a $25 max bet. They uses to have a few $5 vp machines also which by the way looked like Moses himself might have played on them. They are for sure big on low denomination machines and draw a very low class crowd. To be truthfull its not much more than a neighborhood gambling house. The state had to take over the place a while back because they were without an owner from what I understand. As far as gambling addiction goes I think places like this are bad news. It is located in a town with a population of around 7,000 below average income folks which tends to be where most casinos like this end up. The casino itself depends on locals for the biggest part of thier income and these are people who really afford to be gambling in the first place. At least the casinos in Tunica are not located in the town of Tunica and are about 30 minutes away from Memphis. It is truly a sad place and possibly worse than the Oklahoma casinos I went to.
