Hi!! And my Dumb Newbie Question...

Post by QuadMagnet »

Greetings fellow VP folks!
Hi!!!!!
I am new here - and so pleased to have found this forum! Perhaps now all my perplexing VP questions will finally be answered!!
First of all - Major Mega Thank You to whomever is hosting and policing this site!! A job very well done in MHO.
Okay, I have a bunch-ola of questions. However, I will try to be patient and present just one (or two?) at a time. And I do also hope that I might be able to contribute to your discussions as well, at least on some (albeit rather limited and lame) newbie level.
Anyhooooo, regarding my boatload of VP questions that I seek your collective wisdom on, I’ll start w/the one that is perplexing me the most at this very moment.
So, here goes…
Q: How do you deal with, ahem, ‘stubborn’ casino marketing folks? They send me offers, based on my prior play, but when I attempt to take them up on their offers they treat me like I’m some sort of con artist bcuz I want to actuall use their free room offer.
How should I handle this? Ask to talk to their manager? Threaten to use my other free room comps at the casino next door? Beg “pretty please?” Or what?

As far as I’m concerned (& I could be wrong; sure as heck wouldn’t be the first time!), these free room offers are to get me back in their door(s), and are based on my prior play. Which means they want my business, right? So, why treat me like freeloading scum when I attempt to book a room? I guess I just don’t get it. (BTW, I live 6 hours from Nevada, so free rooms and free (gourmet) food are the biggest draws for me (after VP paytables, of course!).
Any advice from y’all seasoned VP comp pros out there?
P.S. My (minor league) ‘action’ is typically $10k to $25k+ per session/trip, in case that matters. I usually play $1 to $4 (max coin = $5 to $20 per hand) single line for 2 to 8 hours per day, and a trip can be anywhere from a (one) day trip to four days/three nights. Shouldn’t this kind of play get me some decent room comps??? And more??  Argh!!

I have never seen a $4 machine.
Is 10k to 25k your bankroll? What games do you play and how long you been at VP?

That bankroll should be more than sufficient to warrant some nice comps.

VP players are more and more getting the short end of the comp stick however those numbers at the $1 level should get you some nice RFB comps for sure!

QuadMagnet,What Casino is giving you problems with your comp'd room offers and what sort of hassle are they giving you.  That sounds like a Hotel/Casino that I would want to stay away from...especially these days when the traffic to Vegas is slowing to the point of showing up in their revenue figures!Or, maybe whomever it was you were getting the flack from just got up on the wrong side of the bed that morning. My wife and I are penny ante compared to your coin-in and when we check in to a hotel in Vegas, they have ALWAYS treated us very nicely.  Never had any complaints.

Same here, QM shouldn't have any problems along those lines.  Sometimes I'm even given a free room upgrade without asking for it.

Hi OEJ,
Reno has machines that are multi-game and multi-denomination that take from one to 20 credits per hand; the full pay royal kicks in on the 5th credit, just like traditional machines do, but you can also play another 1 to 15 credits on top of that. So, since I like to play dollars, the max bet ($20) is essentially the equivalent of a $4 machine. The vpFree database refers to these machines as “25c/50c/$1 (20-coin FP at 5) MG/MD Game Kings slant-tops.” I’m not sure why they are set up like this, but I like them! I usually just play the five coins, but if I’m up, or feeling lucky, I do like to hit that max coin - sure would be sweet to hit that $16k royal! (I haven’t hit a royal yet, but when I finally do I sure hope it’s while I’m playing the max coin on one of those machines.)
No, 10k to 25k isn’t my bankroll, it’s my total coin in. I don’t really have a set bankroll (it’s one of the vp topics that I‘m confused by and have questions about, but I’ll save that for another thread).
I play JoB, BP, DDB, FPDW, NSUD, DdLX, and DB (but w/a slightly modified JoB strategy).  I've been playing for about 6 years, I think.  But I don't get to a casino very often (just one to six times a year), so I still consider myself a bit new to it.

Cheers,  Q

I couldn't agree more, Ed!  When I first started playing $1 denom VP in 2002 the hosts were practically falling all over themselves to hand me their business cards.  And I got sweet suite comps, as well as $50-$100 comps to the casinos' best restaurants.  But apparently those days are long gone.

I don't know if it's true, but I read somewhere (maybe vpFree?  But not sure?) that the Silver Legacy in Reno has even gone so far as to send out letters to their VP playing customers to let them know that they won't be giving out the good comps for VP play anymore.  How sad!

Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe.  I've pretty much had it with the whole Harrah's chain.  They've downgraded all their machines, best I can find is JoB.  And they treat me like crap when I try to use a comp that they've offered me.  And I've always found their Total Rewards desk clerks to be really snotty.  So, I think I'm finally done with them.  It's really too bad because they really have the nicest (casino) accomodations in Tahoe; but I'm not going to pay full price (~$350 on Fri or Sat night) to stay at a casino with pitiful VP and snarky customer service!
