I just read today that the Harrah's in Joliet Illinois has laid off 45 workers there, about 4% of their workforce. The positions were mainly slot attendants & cocktail. A comment made by management there said that no table supervisors were cut loose because activity remains strong in that area. They attributed the need for the layoff to the smoking ban in Illinois, gas prices and the slow economy.

Don't bother laying off any suits, get rid of the people who provide actual service to customers. I can't remember if I posted about the last trip I made to Harrah's/Tunica or not  but the service was horrible and the vp machines were in bad shape. I tried to make the best of my visit but I only got one drink and couldn't find a slot attendent anywhere when a ticket hung up. When I finally got the ticket there was a problem with it so I was told I had to go to a cashiers window to get my money. Surprise, surprise only two windows were open and there was a nice little line to wait in. Another thing that had me concerned about Harrah's that night is about half the vp machines were down for some reason and the techs were workings on each one. I suspect they may be lowering the payback. On a good note though Sheriton Casino seems to be doing pretty well. I found several people there playing the vp machines, some I hadn't seen in a while. They like to make fun of me because I still play at Harrah's and the Racino. The racino gets only a sliver of my play though, its kinda like donating to a charity when you go there.

This guy got a bailout before it ever became popular. Just 250k. Small change to some.

What that guy needed was a count out, not a bail out.

Right. He needs to be knocked out. The way he drinks he stays knocked out or close to it.

Oej, I'm disappointed in you - you forgot to include your trademark "Gulp, gulp".  I'll cover you this time, but don't let it happen again.

He complained in one of his recent e-letters that one of the places he plays at has stopped giving free drinks to their bar players.  If that becomes a trend, he might have to go cold turkey.  If casinos also start removing their distracting eye-level widescreen TVs then this confusion he has about whether more $'s are coming out of his machine than are going in will be removed.

CD; any truth to the news of a casino closed in Cripple Creek? I would ask my compadre OEJ but difficult to explain things through a telephone and a plexiglas window. Maybe the Warden would know?

Ed, the Cripple Creek casinos are in the southern part of the state and I only play in the places up near Denver, in Black Hawk and Central City.  I don't know if any of them have closed in Cripple Creek, but I just did a quick check and if one did close they've still got about 20 others down there.
