I'll tell you where *not* to play VP...

Post by Goodpup74 »

Hi all,

I've been member of this site for quite some time but never made it to the forums from all the playing.

I've been playing VP for about 15 years or so. I can tell you that the machines in Wisconsin casinos have become somewhat more "player friendly" over the years with better game variety and such.

However, the newer machines that have been installed (game kings and game makers) have some of the worst paybacks I have ever seen regardless of denom. This goes for the Oneida, Menomenee and Ho-Chunk casinos. I don't even go to Potowatomi in Milwaukee from horror stories I've heard.

Anyone else have an opinion on indian casinos versus LV or even regional riverboats? I know the odds are pretty much the same regardless but 6/5 paybacks on JoB and most bonus varieties and 1/1 on two pair and some 3oaK wins, I'm saving my pennies for a red eye to Nevada.

The casinos will put in lousy paytables if people will play them. I've been to Green Bay a few times and did not see anything I would play. I've played at HoChunk a few times also (not for a few years, though) and they used to have some decent paytables. I have heard the machines I played are long gone.

I know WI limits return to <100% so you will never see anything positive without considering other factors.

Goodpup...

welcome to the forum.

I know one indian casino (here is so cal) that is the only one for hundreds of miles. their pay schedules suck but people play those machines but it's the only game in town.

however, a different indian casino i go to a few times a year has pretty decent paytables. can't recall offhand the ddb schedule, but the tdb schedule was 9/5 for 10-play quarter level which isn't all that bad. actually, it beats any pay schedule from any of the Coast Casinos in Vegas.

Just judging from the people i usually see playing VP at the indian casinos, I don't think more than 1% (at best) even know what a pay schedule is, quick frankly. They wouldn't know what 6/5 means and whether it was good or not.

Generally, like you said, i try to save my pennies for Vegas!

I live in Wis and the few times I gamble here are usually on the "old" vp machines, including 3/5 play.

I would stay away from Desert Diamond (off Valencia) in Tucson, specifically the DDB in the no smoking room.I have had a couple sessions of 2-3 hundred without even  4OAK...The Jack of Better in the smoking area is much better. Had a streak ofRoyals (4) on 4 different machines in 4 sessions....

First off, congratulations on the streak of Royals.

But don't let your "sessions of 2-3 hundred" turn you off. With DDB especially, you can go for a LONG time and not hit 4-trees (4oak). I played this last trip (last week in fact) at South Point where the machines were +100% in ER. I played through 1000 credits in "buy-ins" (not coin through!) which if I had won not a single hand would have been 200 hands and hit not one single 4oak. I have no idea how many hands I played, but it was significantly more than the average number (430 aproximately) through which you would expect to hit 4oaks.

At that same casino last year, playing next to SM, I bought in for 20 credits and hit 2 4oaks. DDB is a VERY volatile game!

To continue that scenario, I played DDB the next morning at Main Street Station where the pay tables were 9:6 instead of 10:6. I bought in for 40 credits and in fairly short order, hit quad fours with a 3 to earn a quick 800 credits.

If you are a DDB player, you know you pretty much have to at least hit those little 250 credit quads to stay in the game and unfortunately, more often than not, you will not hit enough of them to stay afloat. Then one day you hit a 2000 credit quad or maybe a 4000 credit Royal and you're back above the surface. You have to be willing to lose in long streaks if you are going to play that game.

There are others with a lot less volatility that can somewhat alleviate the pain of those long DDB losing streaks.

Thanks. I actually started on the end machine of the JoB 12 machine carosel and worked my way down. When I tried the 5th machine, I busted out. It's pretty hard to stay upbeat about a machine that sucks a few hundred without a 4OAK... But I do understand what you are saying.I actually prefer to stay at the same machine. This weekend we went to Harrah's in Maricopa, Az.  I went against my better judgment and changed machine. Sure enough, the next person who sat down on the machine  I left hit the Royal.... I know....it may or may not have hit if I stayed....Also played a little...forget the name of the game, but Aces w/kicker pay 4000 quarters....  Hit 3's and 4's w/kicker but that's about it.... A loosing trip for sure....

rayi you were probably talking about Triple Double Bonus, it pays 4,000 for quad aces with a 2/3/4.

there is some new vp game called "all american poker" that seems to be surfacing. I had never seen it until december at primm. then, at the indian casino here in so cal, i saw it a few weeks ago. they removed 2 of the better paying vp machines and replaced it with the aa ones. the paytables are god awful even for an indian casino. there are a selection of games to choose from and you can play 25 cent, 50 cent or 1 dollar and 3,5, or 10 play. the highest i saw was 9/5 for ddb and that on dollars. It was equally was bad at primm.
However, as mentioned, if the machine is there, people will play it. once someone left, another person would come along. most would play 1 line and never would check the pay schedule. I saw 1 guy hit a royal flush and it only paid 250 credits! b/c he was only playing a few credits.

All American poker is is not new. It has been around a long time. It is one the best paying games if you find the best paytable. If it pays 200 for quads and 40 for straights, flushes and FHs you are in luck. That is well over 100%. It does have one of the most difficult strategies to learn. You sometimes keep 3 for a straight among other wierd things.
