I think VQ is thinking of an option on some poker machines that allows you to "Double" if you have won the hand.  If you select it, you are given a screen from which you pick one card out of three or four cards and if your card is larger than that of the dealer, you double your winning hand's credit value.

I've always considered that a sucker bet.  Seems like there is no advantage to be had with it...at best a 50/50 shot.  If I remember correctly, the old machines at Fitzgerald's are like this.  The bad thing is that you have to hit "NO" each time you win a hand in order NOT to double automatically.  Slows the game down.

I am going to disagree with you, Mike. The odds are exactly even, making it the only game in the house where the casino has no advantage. That said, not too many players would want to risk money they had just won, even with 50-50 odds. Double up requires the player to activate it after any win, and then five cards are shown. One is turned up, and the player must select one card of his own. If his card is higher he wins. Lower, he loses what he just won. Tie, he can go again or cancel the option and retain his winnings.

I know a guy who is called a "doubler" in casinos. His entire game is doubling. He claims to make money, but it is sure a nerve-wracking way to do it. He will double a win up to five times, frequently busting on a nice pile of money. It is very hard to watch someone risk that many wins, although I have seen him reach jackpot status a time or two.

In most states that allow double-up, there is a limit on either how many times you can do it or the top dollar allowed.

Earlier, someone posted on this forum a funny story about a drunk trying to exit the game and instead repeatedly doubling up. That was funny, but in reality, many of the players I have seen recklessly plunging into a double up bet have, in fact, had a few -- or more. My take on it is this: Even if the odds are even in double-up, the odds are 100% in my favor if I simply keep my winnings.

(Mike, when I say 50-50, I mean it is 50-50 at the time you activate the double-up option. Once the dealer's card is revealed, of course, it is no longer 50-50.)

Rascal, I think you and I share the same attitude and opinion of the Double or Nothing option.  Since it is 50/50 or exactly even, you cannot gain an advantage with it so why do it?  With even odds, long term return will be no different than if you didn't use it to begin with.  I'll pass on using it!

Now, if by using it, you gained even 1% advantage, then I'd be all over it!

A couple of comments. First, on older IGT machines you do have to say "NO" if the double option is on and you do not want to select it. This changed with the newer IGT machines where you now select "Double" as an option. Second, a payback of 100% (50-50 odds) may be the best payback in some casinos. That could make doubling the best gamble available. Personally, I wouldn't gamble too much without an edge over the house. Also, I've never seen a casino give points for this kind of bet.

For the most part I'm with the group on doubling..I don't risk my winnings, however, for the fun of it I will occasionally double on a pair or two pairs. I don't put my bankroll at risk and I probably have won more than lost by risking only 5 or ten credits. I never double if I'm at or below fifty credits and trying to build.

Indeed, the "double up" bet does not have an advantage to the player or the house, but it is money being risked by the player that does not earn any slot club benefits (with rare exception).  Like vpguy3, I will *occasionally* double a one-pair winning hand, but usually just "for fun."  I've also done it if one double would put me at enough credits to reach my win goal for that session (for example, if I'm 20 credits shy of my goal and have a hand of two-pair, I may 'risk it' and double-up once to try and get to my goal).
