Post by edog743 »

I found the forum rules in said document it states hate speech is not tolerated. I find the word INDIAN as hate speech being native american. So webman what are you going to do about it?

As I pointed out in the other topic, the term Indian Casino is common vernacular and can be found in documents all over the place. There are even native american organizations that use the term themselves. As such, it is not considered hate speech, even if you are personally offended by it. If people call you an indian personally and you are offended by the term, then that is another matter that we can address if it happens. But if people want to use the very common term of "Indian Casino" then I think it would be unreasonable to censor it given they are not using it in a derogatory manner.

edog, Thanks for adding to my education.  I generally come to this forum to be educated about developing trends in video poker, but from time to time my understanding of facts or opinions on other topics is also enhanced.  I'm sorry you are offended by others' posts, whether it was intentional on their part or not.  It will be interesting to see if you are the only one who is or if there are others among the 36,000+ forum members that support your concerns.  I guess we have already heard from a few that do not. When engaging in honest debate, I don't like to list things like my race, gender, ethnic background, nor even specific education to bolster my views.  I think that the words supporting the argument should be more important as to whether my viewpoints will be adopted by others than my demographics.  I don't believe I have a higher moral ground than others on the basis of those categories, though I realize that others (including a recent appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court) may disagree with me and feel that they gain at least an emotional edge in a debate by listing them.  I've tried to educate myself as to what "hate speech" means and I find that it's use is somewhat controversial, at least in the United States, where hate speech laws have often been held to be incompatible with the free speech concept of the First Amendment.
Some critics of the term "hate speech" have even claimed that it is a modern example of what would be included in the Orwellian "Newspeak," the fictional language in Nineteen Eighty-Four, used by the totalitarian Party to reduce any alternative thinking and to force everyone to agree with what the Party chose as the best way to think.I think you posted earlier that the word you don't like was given to people indigenous to the Caribbean islands by Columbus and that you preferred the term "Native American."  I think you said something like, "That was his word.  Not ours."  Although, I'm not an expert, I would guess that the words "native" and "American" are as similarly steeped in European etymology as is the word that you don't like.  It also was not clear to me why Columbus's choice of a term automatically made it offensive.  I wonder what discussion we might be having if Columbus had instead coined the term "Native American."  Would that then have been the more offensive term?  I wonder what words will be considered offensive 50 years from now. Before your posts, I did not know that Wikipedia had a "List of ethnic slurs."  In the nearly 200 entries to that list, many of which I had never heard, the word that you don't like is not listed as an ethnic slur.  I don't know how many people need to be offended to get a word listed there, but you may want to investigate that since that undoubtedly reaches a wider, more diverse audience than you can expect at a video poker forum.  There I learned yet another new word.  I guess if you are very learned, you can use the word "ethnophaulism" instead of ethnic slur, though you might not find it in spell-check software or many dictionaries.Good luck on your quest and I hope you can eventually find enough peace to continue going after some royal flushes.Edit:  I didn't realize that Webman had made a post before I made this one.  As you can tell from the length of my post, it took me a bit longer than 8 minutes to compose.
