I wonder if anyone else has witnessed anything as stupid as this. While playing a women sat down next to me and started playing, after a few minutes she hit quad aces after looking at her hand I noticed that she had held all 5 cards so I said "it dealt them to you huh, nice one". Then I realized the card in the 5th slot was a 6 and she had held that also. She was playing Double Double $1 at max bet which quad aces with a 2,3 or four pays $2K she never even drew for the kicker. I decided to tell her and all she said was "so what I probably would'nt have gotten it anyway and a bird in the hand is better than one in the bush".
I was dumbfounded by this idiot and although I did feel the urge to call her an idiot I decided to just let her be content in her stupidity. To tell you the truth I did'nt think you would have had the option of holding the 6 with the quad aces on double/double. I keep wondering if I looked at the cards she held wrong.

I've done this! I was dealt 4 aces on ddb vp and held all five rather than going for the kicker. I thought I was playing just double bonus though. The reason I and many others hold all five positions on a dealt quad is that we are afraid that we'll screw it up. It's a very safe play. In a ddb case, it's a stupid one!---CWA---

No, you did'nt see the cards wrong. My sister did the exact same thing, sitting next to me, no less. She was/is a novice. She thought the same as the person sitting next to you: "I would'nt have gotten it anyway". I did'nt have the heart to tell her that she had a better than 1 in 4 shot(12 available kickers out of 47 remaining cards) of connecting.

These kind of misplays happen a lot more often than you might think. I once saw the coin-in/coin-out figures for a machine that pays back over 100% and the actual payback was closer to 93%.
Many times I've seen people keep a flush or straight over 4RF. I've seen people sit down at wild card machines and play JOB strategy, throwing away the wild cards on a regular basis. Not too long ago I was playing FPDW and the lady next to me held two deuces with a five. She then proceeded to hit the other two deuces anyway. I could go on and on ...

I have also seen the same mistake occur several times with four aces in DDB. In addition to actually seeing players do it, I have had two confess to me that they did it. I don't know why VP players do this --- it is a fairly significant goof.
As Shadow pointed out in his 2:25 post, the casino's take is greatly enchanced by errors on the part of the player. This is one of the reasons the casino environment and personnel are deliberately distracting.
As I have posted before, my former girlfriend is assistant manager of a large chain-owned casino. She has told me countless times that casinos greatly count on two actions of video poker players: 1. Errors, and 2. A refusal to win. By refusal to win, she means that when the players finally beat the odds and hit a jackpot, over 70% of all players put all or most of it back into the machines.
So if a machine has a 99% payback in theory, the casino isn't sweating it, because they know that --- thanks to the majority of video poker players --- the machine will never get close to a 99% average.

The 3 main reasons for making that gaffe would have to be:#1. Inexperience of the player.#2. Switching back and forth between games on multi-game machines.and the biggest culprit of all: #3.FATIGUE. You have to know when it's time to hang it up for the day.

Probably one of the oddest things I've seen happens all the time at Main Street Station (Las Vegas). There is a bank of multiplay/multidenom machines at the lobby end of the casino (north) close to the Main Street wall of the casino. Every one of these machines (single line poker anyway) have 9/6 DDB except for one that is 10/6. The 10/6 machine is nearly always open. I cannot tell you how many times I saw the machine next to the Full Pay machine occupied while the 10/6 was empty (and of course, the player playing DDB).
All the other paytables on those machines are the same. Only DDB on that one machine is full pay. If you move up to quarter or higher on that full pay DDB game on that machine, the paytables are adjusted back down to 9/6.
People as a rule just do not know how to read pay tables! While playing, I don't as a rule pay much attention to what neighbors are doing (concentrating of fast and accurate play too much) so I don't really have any stories about miss-held hands.
But, on that full pay machine, this past Monday morning, I hit 9 quads and one straight flush in a matter of 2.5 hours. I got 10 scratch cards and of course, all of them were for $1. I played the entire week (split between Blackjack and VP) and never did hit a Royal. Haven't hit one since Sept 13 of 2006.

I observed a lady that would throw away anything but a pair. She had some good hands dealt to her, but she wouldn't keep them. I know in my heart that she would have thrown away four to a Royal if it had been dealt to her, because there was no pair there.

I've done that twice also. Once was on dollars at the Rio and once was with four 4's on a $10 machine at the Hard Rock. If I can make those kind of mistakes anyone can. (right?).

I once saw someone hold a dealt flush on 5 hands which was 4 to a royal on an 8X multiplier on Super Times Pay. If I would have known they were going to do that, I would have GLADLY paid them the $250 they won for the shot at hitting just one royal on an 8X multiplier...
