Help the newbie!

Post by Dtd »

Hi y'all..
I'm new in these parts. Anyone willing to help? I'm headed to Vegas tomorrow and could use a crash course in Jacks or Better games.

I've plaid before, but not much. Hit 4 of a kind a couple times which was fun, but would love to up my chances by knowing a bit more.

Thanks in advance!

Know when to hold 'em. Know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away. Know when to run.

I would just say practice on the site here first for free and try a few diffreent strategies. I'm still learning myself but since I found the little "test your skills" thing on the left side of the site it's shown me that I have been playing a lot of hands wrong. At least statistically. But I'm still trying to figure out if playing every hand for the best "statistical probability" is always going to win me the most. I don't play Jacks or Better so much though because I like fancier stuff.

I wish the test your skills thingy let me choose from all of the game types but it at least is helpful in knowing some odds.

What sort of tips are you looking for? Where will you be playing?

Well yes it is hard to just give advice on how to play especially since you are there tomorrow but I will just say hey good luck to you and be sure to let us know how it goes!!!!!

Only advice I can give is to not spend too much on high risk games in the casino (save it for video poker!), figure out how to read pay tables (it teaches you on this site) and play smart and not too drunk!

Where are you staying and where are you playing? Do you know yet? Oh how I do need to get to the Vegas! I've never even been there.

Play nickles...Ask people next to you for advice. Most players are very nice and will help you. If you have time go to the book store and get a book on video poker statagies....You could prob. pick one up in the Vegas airport. Don't ever use a credit card or ATM. Just take what you are willing to loose and have fun....Bob Dancer has a wonderful CD that will teach you a lot, but you don't have time to buy it now. Worth the money when you get back...Good luck.

I`ve learned a lot from playing on line. wizardofodds.com has some good training games, lets you see what you should be doing for most basic games. I started with jacks or better but now play mostly DB or DDB with some deuces wild for a change of pace. Before I head to a casino, local or LV, I hit this site... groups.yahoo.com/group/vpFREE/.. to check for the best games there and where they are located.

Practice is the biggest key, but don't stress too much. At the end of the day, if you only have a few hundred bucks, perfect play might only get you another few hands.

However, if you get a lucky hit early - you'll be laughing all the way to the bar, slot banks, etc.!

Play nickles or quarters until you learn the game.  Order Bob Dancer's C.D. and practice, practice, practice.  It gives you the best play each hand.
