I NEVER win playing video poker anymore.

Did you hit any jackpots? Did you get a great comp? We all want to know!

Interesting posts, Tony. I played at MGM Detroit for a couple hours today and wish all those foyals counted for something! Single line, TDB and DWB. NO quads, deuces, aces or royals in sight. Nor did I see anyone else hit. On other trips I have hit early on 50 play or STP and then SANK! Those two are addicting and can be killers, as in negative! I am pretending they do not exist!I usually have better luck at Greektown. DDB, TDB and DWB, .25, .50 and $1, single, three and five play. That new parking structure in front of the hotel looks almost ready and there is a walkway to the casino over Monroe Street. The great three day annual jazz fest is this weekend on Woodward and at Hart Plaza on the Detroit River front. It's close enough to Greektown for parking and the People Mover!

STP is the crack cocaine of VP! We put $100 in a $1 STP machine and play 2 lines and if we hit so mething we get up and walk away and if we lose the hundred we get up and walk away. We treat it like a slot machine. We used to play 3line quarters for around 5 years and maybe had 3 or 4 winning trips in all that time!

I posted back5 or months that was at the Wynn with family. These folks really do not play VP.So there skill level is weak at best.I watched why 5 of of them played basic JOB 5 people 90 minutes or so.The best hand anyone had was full house. The best hand dealt was also a full house. The pay tables were fine.I get comped at the Wynn, but i will never stay there again. For all you math guys what do you think the odds are on that trial.I just think things have changed in the VP world. Just my view, but i stand by it.

OP, at the nickel level, many STP machines pay 7/5 for DDB. This only returns 95.98% for a 6 nickel wager!!

The best nickel STP I have seen for DDB is 8/5. This pays back 97.06% including the bonus bet.

With these paytables and playing $3 a deal, it's going to be very difficult to be ahead long-term.

Fwiw, I'm addicted to this game as well. But I play for amusement only. One hand for nickels usually.

Well, to be honest it depends on how fast people play and how many hands total they got in 90 minutes. Quads or better will happen about once every 400 hands given correct strategy. Since they were "new" I'm guessing they were slow. Even so, you saw a fairly unlikely event.

1500 total hands: (200 hands/hr speed average) 2.36%
1875 total hands: (250 hands/hr speed average) 0.92%
2250 total hands: (300 hands/hr speed average) 0.36%

You're lucky. I have not hit a royal flush yet this calender year.
I don't consider my eight royals this year "lucky" at all. I have played a little over 83000 deals of 5 line 50c video poker this year.  That's a little over 415000 hands.  Eight royals in 415000 hands, an average of one every 51800 hands or so, is not lucky!

Sure it is lucky, Onemoretry. While you feel that the law of averages may lean in your favor with that many hands, VP is a random game, governed by the 'Law of Independent Trials". What happened before has no bearing on what happens next. You may have gone all year without an RF.

It's called a 'cold streak'.

Hey Marie, I just got back from playing at Greektown. They were having a $555 drawing every 20 min, so I went down for a few hours. Played the progressive DWB , it was over $1250. I didn't hit anything big but was able to play for 3 hours or more on $200. Lady next to me hit for almost $800 and there were quite of few 5 aces. Finally decided to get up from there and started walking out and saw a row of VP .50 & $1 on the aisle leading to the parking garage. Sat down for $100 and about 10 minutes later it dealt me 4 10s for $125. A few minutes earlier a guy a few machines down hit AWAK for $2000. Anyway, played mine down and walked away only 100 bucks down for almost 4 hours of play, so I was happy!

Short of actually being ahead, Tony, you did good for that length of play! Did you catch any of the jazz fest? Tues. that DWB was $2065 when I left. None of us have ever seen it that high. I played a $20 up to $360 and watched it go slowly down and added a few more $20. Hit deuces and aces once each which kept me in play. Guy next to me hit deuces w ace for $500. I loved when that happened to me once when friends gave us Tigers tickets they could not use! WIN WIN for me!. OK, we treated those wealthy friends to breakfast over their protests! The DWB royal progressive has hit for me several times, usually $12-1600 range, just not often enough. My major mistake is thinking I'll play until someone hits that royal and preferably ME!MGM just sent me a first time $35 per night rate. Last year, they sent me two free nights. I won $8K there on three hands the first night and unfortunately gave a bunch back before we finally left! Their pool is sensational and my husband and I liked the room!

I agree with you that getting a royal on any given hand is highly improbable and, therefore, lucky. But, when you amass those miniscule chances over thousands and thousands of opportunities, at some point you can be considered unlucky not to have hit a royal. So, when published data indicate that, on average, a royal occurs about every 41000 hands or so, and I am plodding along at the rate of one every 51000 or so, averaged over about 10 royal "cycles", I cannot consider myself lucky.  Nor, do I think I'm extremely unlucky either - but I'm definitely operating on the poorer side of the bell curve.

Sara, I would really like to see an example of the website that you refer to. Can you accommodate me with a web page link?

Hello. Sorry I have been kind of busy with my little fuel injector empire. I will track down a link and post it.  I do have one of the "House Advantage" fliers from Hollywood casino here (The ones they put on top of all the ATMs) and it goes over how the machines pay out at X% and over the long run you will loose more than you win and the longer you play the lower your return. For example if the machine pays on average 97% after $100 you have $97 left. Then second go round of the $97 you'd have $94. Then of the $94 you'd have $92 etc etc.  I'll do some re-looking for links tonight as I have just read them on sites and don't have them saved in my favorites or anything.
