Is it possible?
I was at a local Vegas bar and an elderly woman was playing Double Double Bonus. She was playing $1 and only playing one credit at a time. The baertender told her that she should play all 5 credits because "you never know". About 10 minutes later she hit 4A w/2. She was so happy with her $2000 win she bought the bar a drink (only 4 people but still nice.) She cashed out and after the bartender gave her the paperwork to sign and paid her she put another $100 bill into the same machine. When the bartender reset the game she hit a royal on the VERY FIRST HAND! I figured that there would be some sort of internal timer to regulate big wins.

Absolutely not. In Nevada, as well as other regulated jurisdictions, such a "timer" would be 100% against the law. In video poker, the cards must be dealt from a "fair" deck every time -- the machine is not permitted to pay less when there have been big wins on it, nor would it pay more just because it has taken in a lot of money. Each hand is from a random shuffle, and the software evaluates the final hand for payment once the player holds or discards from the initial deal.

Playing at the old Tresure Bay some years ago, I hit a $2000 royal. After they paid me the attendant cleared the machine and asked me to play a hand while she and the floor manager watched. On my first hand I hit another $2000 royal. Back to back. So it does happen and there is no internal timer regulating wins. Win regulation is performed by that big dealer up in the sky.

Some people have all the luck...this did remind me of a question. Has anyone ever had a "hot" machine shut down on them by a casino? Not because of an obvious malfunction or anything like that, just shut down? Some years ago I was having a nice day on a $1 DDB machine, and after the second coin fill (this was pre-TITO) I was told that the casino had a policy of shutting down a machine if they had to do a coin fill four times in a 24 hour period. I thought at the time that it was kind of strange, since at the same casino I'd occasionally need fills three or four times during a session, let alone what anyone else playing that machine earlier or later the same day needed. As I said, that particular day was a nice one, but not a great one - a fair number of quads, but nothing better than 2's-4's.

Not personally, but I was talking to a man last month who had just had this happen to him that day. It occurred after he had 3 consecutive hand pays. The last two were dealt to him while the attendents were watching him play off the big win.

I had this same thing happen to me a couple of summers ago in Tunica at the Horseshoe. I hit quad Aces with a kicker, on the spin off I got the Royal Flush. The machine disappeared soon after.
