Re: Opinions on the new daily contest format

Post by Royals2mm »

I think you have the correct information gathered, and since it's your website, you certainly are free to run these contests as you deem fit.  At the same time, for the PAYING constituents, their input should be considered...It is a 2-edged sword/dilemna - trying to balance daily vs monthly contests.I'm not sure how option 2 would work out, but I do still like the idea that rewards 'endurance' over the 23 days of trying to choose the best game and strategy (rather than trying to win just the daily contest). As for the contests : " You need to play one way for the Winner's Challenge, and another way
for the Daily Contest prize, and that made it completely out of reach
for people playing TDB, though their expectation was that they had an
equal shot in both."It's too bad those playing SOLELY TDB to win the daily, didn't see the longer run picture, if they wanted to win the monthly winners challenge.  If they didn't understand the nature of how different vp games play out, they should by now, and consider it an educational lesson learned.  (A quote from the late Bill Burton fits well here in terms of deciding on what game to play in any risk-taking opportunity "Luck comes and goes, but KNOWLEGE lasts forever.").   I don't have a definitive answer as to which game or game types to offer, but if you have a set amount of prize(s) to giveaway, I think perhaps offering more of the videopoker.com logowear might also be a fun option for the contests, instead of just the 3 months 'gold' membership.  Just another idea....and it would get 'advertising' out there as we (the players) wear this stuff out there in our daily lives or while in casinos.I do think that the 'daily' high score(s) needs to be a SEPARATE contest from the MONTHLY WInners Challenge - as you stated it yourself, different strategies work differently for each contest.   So perhaps, then, you would need to have 2 different contests to offer?   If the webmaster prizepool can afford it, perhaps that would be the solution.   I do like the idea of offering 3 bonus sessions - if the minimal 5 sessions are played.  That encourages the contestants to continue to play (goal? of the site?) and also does give them (us) all a chance at evening out the inevitable bad streaks of luck involved.   If 2 (TWO!) separate contests were offered, then the DAILY could either offer all the games again, in variable daily formats, OR just one game of the webmaster's choice as the "Daily VP game/format" contest of the day, or somesuch.  I hope this input was helpful.  From an avid (and well-read) vp-player of over 20 years.  PS - I first learned about the game by reading Lenny Frome's original writings in "Video Poker: America's Game of Chance" (or similar title).  When I had some q's about the game - long before so many variations and formats became available in the early 1990s, he was quick to write back to me.  I cherish those letters (before e-mail and internet).Mainly- this was around the time when STATIONS first began experimenting with different game/paytable variations - to make it more interesting for their casino customers...Once Action Gaming and SIGMA and other competiting companies started offering different games - the popularity of vp exploded!   Does anyone still remember the "Austin Powers" video poker bonusing games?  Those were a hoot - and perhaps a precursor of the types of bonuses now offered.OK - That's all for now.   Thanks for reading,... MM

Though I'd still prefer choosing which game I play.

As a long time "Free Loader", I'm happy just to be allowed to play any game this site provides, in any format Webman offers. :)

The survey doesn't show me that it has recorded my answer so I will put it here...I love the Daily Contests and Winner's Challenge.  I come close to being in the top ten for the Winner's Challenge each month but never make it!  I personally would be disappointed without it.Here's an idea that might keep everyone happy...During the first week offer 1 gameDuring the second week offer 2 gamesDuring the third week offer 3 gamesMy suggestions on games would be TDB, DDB and DBOr, take a poll on which games people want.

There's a comment on the survey about they players consistently at the top of the winners challenge having adopted a certain strategy. Just a few thoughts on what that is:

- Play the best return game you can find
- Learn the best strategy and execute it
- Don't play tired, or distracted, or drunk
- Play enough so the variance evens out
- Play max coin in for max return

In other words, play like a winner; not just on the day the monster hands come but day in, day out, week in, week out, year after year. Put in the work and acquire the discipline to win consistently. Hence, "winners challenge."

Is that more boring or nerdy or tedious than playing VP as if it were a slot machine hoping to hit the big jackpot? Maybe so.

But how much do you like excitement, and how much do you like money?

'Supta you...Good Mathematics all.

Royals2mm - I agree with your entire post, but didn't want to take up the space by quoting the whole thing.

That "Austin Powers" game was really fun. I remember playing it at MGM in the summer of 2003. Hard to believe that was 10 years ago!

Like some others have said, I play the contests mostly for fun, and I prefer to be able to switch among games whenever I like.  It's great that there's a chance I might win something, but I don't expect to, though the hope is always there.  I don't keep track of who wins what and how often, and I don't really care about that; I'm only interested in what makes it fun for me.  I hope we can go back to the old format, including the Winner's Challenge.
