Not bad, considering the economy...

Nev. casinos report highest annual winnings since 2008
Nevada casinos reported $11.1 billion in winnings for 2013, a 2.6% increase year-over-year and the highest statewide win since 2008. In 2013, casinos on the Las Vegas Strip accounted for 58.4% of winnings, and this year increased revenue by 4.8%. Analysts say much of the revenue increase was because of baccarat, which earned revenue of $1.6 billion, an increase of 16.2% over last year -- without baccarat, statewide revenue would have increased only .6%. As a percentage of revenue, slot machines decreased in prominence to 60.6% of the total, and online gaming revenue remains unclear.

Hi Billy,I was just reading the sad stories out of AC and am curious as to why a coastal scenic area is doing so much worse than casinos out in the middle of the desert. Is it all bad management or is there something else going on? Just wondering.

I, personally, believe that there are several issues that make the two destinations different, Mare.

- Vegas has extensively marketed itself OUTSIDE of the local area. AC gets most of it's patronage from NJ and the surrounding states, all of which now have competitive casinos of their own. This makes AC more of a seasonal/weekend venue.

- Vegas offers many alternate forms of entertainment: many choices in shows, pools and spas, golf courses and nightlife. AC has limited choices in these areas.

- Vegas markets to conventions and trade shows, and offers many choices to an event planner as to where and how to structure an event. AC is just now investing in a Convention center at Harrahs Marina.

- The Vegas airport is built for tourist and convention trade. Most AC visitors that have to fly in to visit go through Philly.

Also don't forget about the crime. Las Vegas authorities have done a better job of controlling it than their Atlantic City counterparts. I'm not saying that there isn't any crime in Las Vegas but they do a better job of minimizing it in Las Vegas for the tourists as well as the locals.

Thank you both for your thoughtful answers. I am familiar with Las Vegas but have never been to Atlantic City or the East coast for that matter! It sounds like AC is very much one dimensional except for the beach locale. How nice are the casinos? Are they themed like many of them are in Vegas?

I have only made a handful of AC trips. The casinos that I visited in AC did have a theme, but not on the scale of Vegas Strip casinos.

The Borgata meaning in Italian is small village. It has a Italian decor.Ceasar's is Ceasars, Golden Nugget is the golden nugget, Bally's & Harrah's is what it is.  The Taj -Mahal resemble the Taj-Mahal in India. But , the interior doesn't since they remodel several years ago.
