Try The D. We have been going there a few times a year over the past 5 years (formally Fitzgeralds)

We definitely enjoy playing at the D - it's in a good spot in the middle of Fremont and there's a wide variety of VP. Only machine they don't have is 9/6 JOB, which seems odd given all of the other games they offer.

How are the rooms at the D? I've read mixed reviews about them on Trip Advisor and Wizard of Vegas. Coming from the golden nugget gold tower, my wife and I don't have lofty expectations. But we also want to be comfortable. How far is it from the rooms at the D to vintage Vegas where the VP is? Haven't noticed an elevator stop in Vintage Vegas but I haven't paid too much attention.

We stay downtown maybe twice a year, as our play is mostly elsewhere in Vegas. In my opinion, rooms at the all non smoking Rush Tower of the Golden Nugget are the best around! We had a 3 night comped stay at MSS and agree with the OP here that the rooms are not as nice.
As far as video poker, we do well at the Golden Gate every time . . . but have never stayed there.

Haven't really played much - if at all - at golden gate. What do they have in the way of VP? According to VPFree2, the best game they offer is 9/6 DDB at the $1 level, which is probably why we never play there. Too volatile a game at too high denom for our tastes. If they had other choices, may give them a shot.

Well, Golden Gate doesn't have great VP unless you play the full pay DDB machines. Hmmm. Although I usually play dollars, I was thinking that it is the same paytables, even playing quarters. Can't honestly recall.

And, I have to admit, the Golden Gate is definitely not the most appealing place to play . . . which is why I have never stayed in their rooms, despite comp offers.

My Mohegan Sun vp buddy and his girl friend ( both in my age range) just returned from a 20 day trip in Vegas. They play together on one machine. Strictly 9/6 job, 99.54% return. He is a former accountant. They never vary. Just 5 quarters in every hand. Anyway, they stayed at the Golden Nugget and had at least 3 nights comped. They played wherever they could find 9/6 games downtown. They said the 9/6 quarter games are still around, but getting harder to find. They hit a Royal early in the trip, played the entire 20 days on that money and still came home 400- ahead. They were given 300- in Visa cards, all food was free, the rest of the rooms were either comped or nominal charges.
In comparison to Mohegan Sun, they like myself haven't hit a Royal in many months. They get no points for playing the 9/6 quarter machines at Mohegan, no longer get free rooms there, and minimal if any free play. They both said there is absolutely no comparison in the machines in Vegas and Ct. They lose quite a bit on every trip to Mohegan Sun and rarely hit Royals. Yesterday, the day I talked to them, they had not hit one quad in 6 hours of play.
There just seems to be a huge difference in player returns still at the Ct. casinos and downtown Vegas.

Wow - glad I don't live near the Ct. casinos... that's pathetic, but I guess it's a sign of little competition in the area.

If Golden Nugget had a 9/6 $0.25 JOB machine, I'd make sure we gave them plenty of action to increase our offers there. Golden Nugget just has very little in the way of decent VP at the $0.25 level. 8/6 BP just doesn't cut it when there's plenty of better choices within walking distance in either direction. But you can't beat their hotel amenities, so they can get away with it. What surprises me is Downtown Grand not offering any good VP. If they wanted to cut into the Golden Nugget share of the market, you would think they'd offer some decent VP to get some people to switch.

Anyone care to share thoughts on NSUD? Seems like a pretty good play on a game widely available at the $0.25 level at the Boyd Casinos and the D. Good balance between high payoffs and volatility compared to DB/DDB - and you don't get killed on the comps like you do for 100%+ EV games.

What do you mean 8/6 BP doesn't cut it?

I suggest you try The D for your next trip. I am a low roller and get excellent comps from The D and I only go once a year between Christmas and New Year. Their upgraded rooms are very nice... look at the pictures on their website. The biggest advantage of The D over Golden Nugget is the short distance you have to walk to get to the casino or to Fremont Street. I have stayed at both Golden Nugget and The D and I prefer The D. Once you get on their mailing list and have stayed there, they send you monthly offers for not only room comps but free play and dining. There is no "resort fee" on comps. Their offers are much better than the Boyd casinos. Also we have occasionally wanted to stay longer than the days offered for a comp... just emailed a host and they gave us the extra days comped!!!---About your Magnolia question.. Four Queens has a lot of 2 for 1's at Magnolia... ask for details at the Player's Club booth or look online at their website... also if you happen to be 55 or over they give you a lot of 2 for 1 and special offers and in your birthday month, they give 2 for 1's for that and they have some other special offers. Their rooms are not quite as nice as The D or Golden Nugget, but they look refurbished in the online pictures and are easy to get comped. Hugo's downstairs at 4Q is a favorite for a special meal... we try to do two special meals each trip... the other special meal is at The D's Andiamo Steakhouse.---Also always book directly with the hotel... not through a 3rd party... to get all the extra goodies. The hotel websites provide great info and I have found that if I have any questions or problems an email gets really good help very quickly.

Downtown Vegas is my sentimental all time favorite place to stay and play, only because I have so many good memeories from there from 1992 thru 2009.While all the places there are definitely NOT the same, I can find nice things to say about every downtown property, even the las vegas club and plaza (who have recently upped their game big time concerning everything......)End of May and into June, when I am playing at the WSOP, I will be staying at least two nights somewhere downtown vegas, but most likely will be either Golden Nugget or Four Queens.

Sounds like you haven't had the room issues I've seen from other websites when staying at the D. Based on the reviews I've read so far, it sounds like they might have the best comp program for VP. We will definitely keep them in mind next time we go to Vegas.

I figured Magnolia's would have some deals, but we've never bothered to ask in the past. On our next trip, I'll definitely ask for the host on duty at the player's club booth to see what we qualify for. It may not be much - since we mostly played the 9/6 JOB games at $0.05 level until they removed them this year - but our play should give us enough for at least one food comp.
