Harrahs Tunica Closing

Post by chattycattty »

Just caught news that CET is closing Harrah's in Tunica. I wonder how this will affect the junket trips there? They still have Horseshoe and Roadhouse there. Feel bad for the people that are losing their jobs.

Scheduled to close June 2, 2014.

I haven't heard that but I'm not really surprised, they lost the best thing they had going for them a while back when they were the closest casino to Memphis. I don't know if you've been to the dog track in West Memphis but that place is drawing a crowd. I wouldn't be surprised to see The Roadhouse go next, I was there a couple of months ago and they had more employees there than players. The Horseshoe seems to be still drawing a decent crowd but it's sure not the place to play VP. I wished I was a wealthy man because I'd buy Harrah's/Tunica and blow the rest of the casinos out of the water by loosening up the slots and raising the paytables on all the vp. I'll never understand the corporate way of thinking when it comes to business, when they should be looking for ways to bring in players they seem to always be exploring different ways to chase what's left away. I've been in business for about twenty years now and I learned long ago you don't grow your customer base by raising prices and cutting services.

Greed is the biggest down fall the casinos are having, they need to take a look back and see what worked in the past.

Yikes !! I am going to Tunica next week ! Good thing I am staying at Horseshoe, I guess.

I wonder if I should go over to Harrahs while I am in Tunica and get a piece of memorabilia, like a door knob?

If the doorknob doesn't work out for ya ask for my shirt because I lost it right off my back last week.

I think Tunica can still be salvaged and have no idea as to why a trolley or some other form of transportation was never built to get people from one to casino to the next, to me spreading the casinos out the way they did is the biggest mistake they ever made. I remember the days when the casinos were packed and it could be that way again with some attitude changes, it's time for them to reinvent themselves. It wouldn't hurt my feelings one little bit to see Ceasars Entertainment pull out of Tunica completely. I really believe if they put me in charge of Harrah's without outside interference I could have that place rocking again in less than 1 year. The players are still around, the dogtrack/casino in West Memphis is growing like crazy and the place is packed all the time because they're doing a better job of attracting and keeping customers.

Chattycattty, if you are still looking for a place to grind up tier credits at $10/credit playing 9/6 JoB, Harrahs tunica still has the old game Kings at the 50c and dollar levels.

I also ran a $20 through to make sure they were $10/point slash try to hit a miracle. 1 hand of 50c JoB and 11 hands of 9/5 White Hot Aces (99.57%) later, I had 3 tier credits and was $20 poorer.

But I had already wasted four aces that trip on the ~99% double deuces wild progressive at Resorts. One of my roughest trips I have ever had in Tunica in terms of play, and my g/f did worse on a percentage basis. The few hands I did get were typically on the wrong game and lower denominations. She played near 1000 hands of VP next to me without a quad. Blah.

I also assume 35/8/5 Bonus (99.66%) in the high limit room at Harrahs is still $10/point too as there are no stickers anywhere, but I am too poor/risk adverse to try that.

And Billyjoe, I hope you don't have the itch to play anything worse than 9/6 TDB when there is 9/6 DDB all over all the CET Tunica properties at the $5 level (and $1 level). I am not sure if CET offers any better than 9/5 TDB.

In other shocking news, Gold Strike also has 9/7 DB at 25c 50c $1 and 9/6 DDB at the 50c and $1 level. They're next to the right hand side Double STP machine in a bank of six but only on two of the corners. Unfortunately TDB is still crap there.

As for the actual topic now, I am definitely disappointed with this news. Although I've never done that well at Harrahs tunica, I still like the casino and is one of the nicer ones in Tunica. Also not happy that this will ruin one of my cheaper hotel options and worry that the Roadhouse will soon be on the chopping block.

Ironically this past weekend was the busiest we've seen Tunica in awhile, maybe ever.

Doesn't look like we will be going to Tunica for a while. I guess we have been taking Tunica for granted. There were always several junket trips from our area to get there. I guess I know why there are not as many now.

On the junkets, we would always stay at Horseshoe. I would walk next door and play VP at Roadhouse. Do not think I will waste my 7 star trip to go to Tunica and without free airfare do not see us going back to Tunica anytime soon.

Maybe CET will concentrate on the two remaining properties but short of giving me free airfare and bumping the pay tables back up at Roadhouse, I do not know what it would take to go back there at this point.

I hope someone moves in and does something with the casino, the convention center and the three hotels. I guess they will keep the golf course and the RV park open as long as they are generating cash flow. I believe they are both part of what CET owns or has an interest in.

Wondering if this is the first of many closures to come for CET. Don't know why they did not sell it to someone like they did with their St. Louis property. As long as Gary Loveman and his band of MBA's and suits are in charge and have a open checkbook to work with and no accountability, there is no telling what is going to happen with them next.

CET tried to buy the Beau Rivage in Biloxi a few years ago, but MGM would not sell unless CET took GoldStrike in Tunica also. Loveman did not want another Tunica property - then or now.

CET is refurbishing The Grand in Biloxi, and will rename it Harrahs Gulf Coast. I just don't think that there are a lot of buyers for casinos in the Mississippi markets. IMO, both Biloxi and Tunica are overbuilt for the customer base that they can draw upon.

I would have to think they tried. But they probably didn't get anywhere close to the price they wanted. I still feel like Penn Gaming overpaid for Harrah's STL ($610M).

Pinnacle Gaming bought ALL of Ameristar for $2.8 billion in comparison. Now THAT was a good buy!!!

Belated happy birthday to you VMAN. Tunica is an interesting place. It is like Vegas in that it was built in the middle of nowhere.

We first started going there in the mid to late 90's right after it first opened. Before we retired, we used to go once a year in March or April to attend the Manufactured Housing Show. We always stayed at Horseshoe, but during the convention we spent much of our time at Harrah's. Maybe it is my memory failing me but it seems both places were packed all the time. We had some great times there.

My best memory of Tunica was in 2001. My wife and I entered a drawing for a Nissan Xterra. There was about 1000 or so of us that entered. I had completely forgotten about it when we came back to the home display area on the final day to say our goodbyes before we left to go home.

Needless to say I was shocked when our factory rep who we bought our homes from came running frantically to inform us that we had won the vehicle. We decided to take the vehicle in lieu of cash. Therefore we had to cancel our return flight so we could drive the vehicle home. If I never return to Tunica I will always have that moment to remember it by.

We still have the car.
