Thanks! And nice win on the car! Yeah, it's like a mini Vegas in the middle of nowhere and needing a car.
Also my g/f was disappointed that the housing show wasn't completely up and running while she was there. She wants to see what it's all about. And it would be a good excuse for me to gamble more...
Doesn't look like we will be going to Tunica for a while. I guess we have been taking Tunica for granted. There were always several junket trips from our area to get there. I guess I know why there are not as many now.

On the junkets, we would always stay at Horseshoe. I would walk next door and play VP at Roadhouse. Do not think I will waste my 7 star trip to go to Tunica and without free airfare do not see us going back to Tunica anytime soon.

Maybe CET will concentrate on the two remaining properties but short of giving me free airfare and bumping the pay tables back up at Roadhouse, I do not know what it would take to go back there at this point.

I hope someone moves in and does something with the casino, the convention center and the three hotels. I guess they will keep the golf course and the RV park open as long as they are generating cash flow. I believe they are both part of what CET owns or has an interest in.

Wondering if this is the first of many closures to come for CET. Don't know why they did not sell it to someone like they did with their St. Louis property. As long as Gary Loveman and his band of MBA's and suits are in charge and have a open checkbook to work with and no accountability, there is no telling what is going to happen with them next.
CET tried to buy the Beau Rivage in Biloxi a few years ago, but MGM would not sell unless CET took GoldStrike in Tunica also. Loveman did not want another Tunica property - then or now.

CET is refurbishing The Grand in Biloxi, and will rename it Harrahs Gulf Coast. I just don't think that there are a lot of buyers for casinos in the Mississippi markets. IMO, both Biloxi and Tunica are overbuilt for the customer base that they can draw upon.
I hate to disagree as far as the customer base butI was there from the start up to now. The first casino to open in Tunica was the Splash Casino, a short while later the casinos started popping up all over the area and they were packed with players. A short while later The Grand Casino was built, a huge success due to being the closest to Memphis and the fact that jackpots were everywhere, people loved to play there. I can remember having to hang out just waiting for a VP machine to become available. At that time I probably played anout 60% VP and 40% slots, doing very well at both for years. I can't remember how many Royals I hit on those Vp machines and I knew a couple that hit 52 in one year alone, common occurance back then because the machines were always full. The slots were loose as goose also, jackpots everywhere and I got my share of them. Then along came Harrahs, first thing they did was take out all the VP machines and replaced them with newer machines, same thing with slots. It didn't take long before the vp players started to grumble about not hitting Royals and the crowd started to thin, same thing happened to the slots. I kept playing VP there because even though the Royals were gone overnight I was hitting everything else in an almost predictible manner. I still played the slots hoping that it was just a cold spell but it was just not working out well. I continued to have pretty decent results every year playing VP even tough I had only hit 2 Royals in a 10 year streatch there. Around 2006 the dogtrack jumped into the casino business and VP was big part of their business. I really didn't care much for the place but for some reason I started seeing Royals again as did all the other players. The place had billboards up all over the place that said: "Have you had your ROYAL today?", and I'll be darned if they didn't practice what they preached, the machines were delivering the goods when it came to Royals. Hard to put my finger on the exact date but around 09/2010 the VP at Harrahs took a turn for the worse and they began to lose even more of their players and it got so bad I found myself playing alone most of the time there. You can walk in at the dogtrack on a Monday afternoon and the place will be packed, weekends there are crazy. The dogtrack has been seeing their revenue go up every single year and are now in the expansion phase again, they keep getting bigger. I was around from day one as far as Harrah's/Tunica goes and they just dogged the place out, they had the Golden Goose but they mistreated the poor thing so bad it ran away. Like I said I hate to disagree but the place wasn't overbuilt until a few years back.

I hear you, Ko, and I respect your observations and real-life history with the location. I think, though, that it's a "then versus now" scenario. At one time, most casino venues were full of happy VP customers. I just don't see that anymore.

As a side note, I was playing Ultimate Texas Hold 'Em table game at The Beau one evening last week at a completely full table. It was my birthday weekend, and I suddenly realized that it looked like I was the youngest player, at 64, at the table. I took a poll of the other players, and sure enough, I was the youngest. We all laughed about it, and rationalized it as we older folks are the only ones with enough disposable income to play in casinos.

I hear you there Billy. I am a couple of years older than you and I seem to be in the middle of the pack as age of vp players goes. You are right about that word disposable...lol...Also I see some younger folks trying vp, and they don't seem to have the patience for it for the most part. Another interesting trend I have noticed is quite a few Asian players are now trying vp. There is a very large Asian patron presence at Mohegan Sun. Some have evidently split away from their traditional games and are giving vp a shot. They do seem to have the patience for it. In fact on my last trip, I was playing next to a very nice and also beautiful Asian gal. ( with boyfriend in the area.) She hit a Royal for 4k on DDB and walked around to the other side of the row. A few minutes later, she hit Aces quads with a kicker. This bank of machines are all no points paid machines, but they do give you status points and returns long term are in the 99% plus range assuming the rng programs are true.

I want to start a new reality TV show where vp players get makeovers. Many of us ( myself included of course ) could probably bust the TV screen before we got the makeovers. ....Sorry if I offended anyone here...Once in awhile or quite often as my wife says..." Don't you ever get tired of putting your foot in your mouth"... ......PS...Don't have the ability to send photos ( or know how) to the site, so I could best describe myself as a cross between George on Seinfeld and Danny Devito. sorry for taking over the post for a moment....just can't help myself sometines...

There's no question the economy played a role but in all seriousness they were losing players before the money started to dry up for lots of folks. There used to be a square of I believe 64- $1 slots machines when it was the Grand Casino, everybody called it Winner's Square and it was tough to get a seat sometimes because the machines were pretty loose and the jackpots were always being hit somewhere, it used to be a lot of fun. First thing Harrah's did when they came in was get rid of it, looking back I think they were sending a very clear message as to what their intentions were. I'm not kidding when I say that if I was very wealthy person I could get that place jumping again and still make money.

I'm only 53 but I got a buddy I play golf with that's 82, great golfer and he can still mash a golf ball. We started playing in some 2-man scrambles and he's my secret weapon because he gets to tee off at the senior tees and many courses around here only have the option of womens tee boxes for those players over 72. He almost always has us on the green or right next to it on most par fours and there's nothing like have a 150 yard second shot on the par 5's. We're a tough duo to beat and I'm looking forward to the weather improving so we can get back out there.

That's why I occasionally post a pic of myself with a trip report in the Forum - no surprises if you ever meet me in person.

Just returned from a trip to Tunica last week...lost my shirt at Harrahs, as usual, and rebounded at Resorts. My brother and I have been going to Tunica since 2001 and usually looked forward to going. When they closed the upstairs (which was FULL of VP machines) , I said that it was unfathomable to me how they could take such a downturn so dramatically and NOT seemed to realize it, I thought, whoever the CEO of Harrah's was, get a grip and realize just how stupid you have become. They have abandoned the shuttle service between the casinos and some of the casinos are so tacky looking, it would not surprise me if they all closed within the near future. Tunica is 20-25 miles from Memphis (based on which casino you stay at) and I don't think they ever rebounded from the flood a few years ago, but why they didn't just keep the status quo with a winning casino, is beyond me.

I am wondering if the flood in Tunica a couple of years ago had anything to do with the decision to close Harrah's and their inability to sell it to anyone else. From what I remember they were hit the hardest. The main hotel and casino as well as the Veranda and Terrace hotels sustained quite a bit of damage if I recall correctly. Don't know about the convention center.

Since it is almost impossible to permanently get rid of mold, that might have been the camel that broke the straws back and explain why nobody was interested in buying the property. The whole area is probably located in a flood plain but the immediate area around Harrah's Tunica must be a couple of feet lower than the rest of the casinos there. Don't know the dollar amount of the damage or if CET was insured. Even if they were, no doubt, if they can still get insurance, I am sure it has gone up substantially.
