My thoughts on this and crime in general probably stray quite a bit from the norm. I long have wished for a national lottery to build and staff more prisons. Put them in the middle of nowhere. I don't really care. If 20 percent of the US population ends up there so be it. At least they wouldn't get out to continue thier crime sprees and have rap sheets as long as a roll of toilet paper. It also would create jobs in construction, staffing, probably medical, etc. etc. I know this will never happen, but those are my thoughts anyway.

DB, i have agreed with many of your posts, but you are way out of line here. just because someone wants to be safe, someone feels criminals should be put away and not harm anyone else, hardly makes them 'right wing'. where have all the social programs, that were going to 'solve' the problem gotten us. billions spent on the war on poverty, yet poverty still exists. even more biliions spent on education, yet the drop out rate has never been higher.  i am no proponent of big government, but i do believe governments primary role should be to protect us.  maybe going back a little bit to those 50's days, where folks took responsibility for their actions, worked out their problems with the help of family/churches, would not be such a bad idea.  capitalism has gotten more people out of poverty than any social program. not my quote, but i believe it, 'opportunity is equal for all, the outcome is up to you".

in your posts, YOU use words such as 'wasted', 'frittered away', 'abuse', 'wasteful efforts' to describe some government spending. that is the exact postion of many 'right wing' folks and fiscal conservatives, such as myself.  you are certainly entitled to your opinions, but, i have grown weary of the class warfare and generalizations that were used. i am not advocating political correctness, simply accuracy.

I have to disagree with your statement about casinos and the greater community. We now have 3 casinos within 30 miles of my home and the taxes they provide for the communities have helped. While it is true that employees are being laid off, I believe they would have left my state (West Virginia) long ago if it hadn't been for the jobs provided by the casinos. I've also seen many retirees supplementing their income with jobs in the casino. While the employees may be stuck in dead end jobs, at least they are able to stay in our area instead of moving (as both of my kids have done). To illustrate the seriousness of the job loss in our community...I retired from a steel mill after 38 years service two years ago...at that time there were slightly over 800 employees. When I started there in 1974 Weirton Steel was the largest employer in the state of West Virginia with over 13,000 employees. Even in the early 80's when steel was being crushed by imports and the company fell on dire straits, the mill was purchased by the employees and became the largest employee owned company in the nation. I can't remember exactly, but I think there were still around 10,000 employees then. For many factors, Weirton Steel did file bankruptcy in 2004 and has changed hands twice, but has never completely shut down. They are now operated by the largest steel company in the world, Arcelor Mittal, which is owned by a family in India.

As for limiting the casinos to Las Vegas I totally disagree. My wife and I would have been deprived of many hours of entertainment if not for the local casinos. We also like to attend minor league baseball games, and we like nothing better than hitting the casino in the morning then taking in a game at night. We plan to do this a lot more as our favorite baseball team, the Pittsburgh Pirates have minor league teams that travel to cities such as Akron, Columbus and Toledo, Ohio; Erie, Harrisburg and Wilkes Barre, PA, all with casinos nearby.
