Bookends

Post by fairwayray »

Has anyone else noticed how you almost never help a pair when they are bookends?

Also, do you notice how many times you will need one card to fill a great hand and it will not hit, but it is the first card dealt in the next hand. If you need an 8 of clubs to make 4 eights if it does not come the 8 of clubs is usually the first card dealt in the hand and if not the first , it will be dealt somewhere in the next hand.
I find it very frustrating

I believe you are incorrect.Next time you're in Vegas, I offer you the following proposition. Every time you play and get a failed 3-of-a-kind, I will lay 2-1 that the card you need isn't in the next hand dealt.that is, if the card isn't present, you pay me $50. If the card is present, I'll pay you $100. After 10 such failed 3-of-a-kinds, you may quit whenever you like.If the stakes aren't high enough for you, I'm willing to raise them.If you want me to work out a prop on the "bookend pairs," I'll do that as well. I think you are allowing yourself to get frustrated over silly superstitions. If you really believe they are true, I'm willing to let you put your money where your mouth is.Bob

So Bob Dancer has a license to make book in Vegas ? I thought it was against the law in the US to place and take bets without a license.

Well either Bob's in a slump with his VP play and needs supplemental income to keep his bankroll intact, or Bob has been unable to play as much VP as he needs due to any number of possible reasons (maybe the casinos are finally blackballing him???)....or maybe Bob just feels real strong about this original poster's superstitions and wants to cure the player of these beliefs.......Either way, let's not make a mountain out of a mole hill......Let Bob do what he wants, but let's also ask Bob to go easy on the original poster's beliefs, afterall we all believed in Santa at one time did we not???

[/QUOTE]In Las Vegas, small bets between individuals are made all the time without legal ramifications. If you and I want to bet whether Mariota or Winston will be the first QB selected in the upcoming NFL draft, it's fine. We could make this wager in the police station within earshot of several officers without worry. If I post a line and take bets from all-comers on this, that's making book and that would be illegal. That said, the original poster was taking a ridiculous position and stating it as fact. I was giving him an opportunity to put his money where his mouth is. I have no expectation that he'll actually look me up and make that bet. Just the fact that a famous gambler would take the other side and even lay odds is usually enough for most people to come to the conclusion that maybe their original position wasn't so well-founded.But if he does look me up and wants to bet on it, I hope he brings a lot of money. I never have too much.Bob

What do you mean " believed "? When we meet some day you will know why I made that statement.

the original poster was making a statement, based on their observations. he/she may very well be wrong, but here is no need to scold them. there are other ways to voice one's opposition or point out where one disagrees.  i thought that was a big reason for the forum, ask questions, get answers, give advice or correct inaccurate assumptions.    not everyone here has spent their entire life banging on a VP machine.

So then maybe the correct way to answer someone looking for guidance with this issue would be to say that yes, what you see happening actually does occur, although not everytime. It is impossible, as the cards are randomly dealt . It is nothing to get frustrated over if you are in for the long haul. If your bankroll is getting short, I can understand the frustration. But that's not the way to approach VP.
