HISTORY

The Tohono O’odham Nation had thousands of acres of their land in the San Lucy District ruined by continuous flooding caused by federal construction of the Painted Rock Dam. To compensate the Nation the U.S. Congress passed the Gila Bend Indian Reservation Lands Replacement Act (Public Law 99-503). The law authorizes the Nation to buy unincorporated lands in Pima, Pinal, or Maricopa counties as replacement reservation lands. It also directs the U.S. Interior Department to transfer the replacement land into federal trust.

In 2003 the Nation purchased 135 acres of unincorporated land near Glendale, Arizona, as replacement land for the purpose economic and community development. The Nation has asked the Secretary of the Interior to take into trust allowing them to build a casino per the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). Lawsuits have challenged the qualifications of these 135 acres as replacement land.

They were working yesterday as well. They're in a hurry to get the casino open.

When the word Glendale popped up. I immediately thought about football. Weekends will just get even much more enjoyable than it is for visitors to visit there. Thanks for sharing!

According to a 2010 article, the The Tohono O’odham operate three casinos and 2,055 of 2,686 devices, which includes its maximum allotment as well as the maximum number the tribe is allowed to lease from other tribes. The article says Tohono O’odham likely would relocate a number of slot machines from one of its larger Tucson area properties.

I am curious as to what tribe will provide lease rights to Tohono O’odham and which Tucson casino they plan on reducing the number of slots.

The Hualapai Tribe comes to mind. While they own?, the Skywalk, their reservation is too remote for a casino. Its kinda down in a canyon, The Grand Canyon.

The Tohono O'odham also have a slot joint outside of Ajo.

It looks like another legal hurdle the Tohono O'odham need to overcome.

Tribe could sue Arizona if gaming agency blocks casino near Glendale

I can't name one government entity that has beaten a tribe in Federal Court. But I'm not up on it as much as I used to be.
