Phil says never go over $20/machine. Extrapolated to dollars play, $100.
The reason I say this is because it helps you to manage your money better.  I cash out and pocket the white tickets whenever the counter reaches $50.  I don't play the white tickets unless I hit a jackpot equal or above my session bankroll. Playing this way, I am practically guaranteed to go home with some money left.  The casinos are experts in human nature and use this knowledge against us.  Learning to resist these tendencies and manage your money well is key to success in this game.  You can't stop losing streaks, but you can manage the short term damage.

Yes, you support my point! He should have played $100 and gotten the hell out at say $20. I'd rather ride out their inevitable cold streaks a quarter at a time too. At quarters, even better to cash out at $40. On a denomination fixed dollar machine, I had no choice but to cash out: $5 to $21 to $11. The next step would have been zero. It was full pay table, so I eagerly hopped on.

Awesome AC Palm Sunday. Won $144. Rare as a low roller. I hit two quads. I got a dealt Straight Flush. 1 in 72,200 odds. Easy $62.50. Unfortunately I then decided to make a "quick killing" at craps. Two hours later, I crawled away even from that farrago after being down $100. Major hassle dragging 25 $5 chips to the cage as well. I get impatient even when intent on going Cheap system and wildly vary on quarter machines. Scatter Shot System. On dollar machines, just buck minimum. Pay table is inferior, 9/5 JOB. But you gotta rack up credits. I did recently play the only dollar 9/6. Hover over it and pounce once someone leaves!

I tend to have awesome days and then days where I go 20 to 30 hands with not even my bet back. I get suspicious when that happens.

Try playing over 40K hands of $1 TDB at max play without a single hand pay, that's a losing streak. A few years back when I was still playing $2 denomination I went to the same casino 13 times in a row with my $2K bankroll per trip and played $2 denomination 9/6 DDB at max play and didn't hit a single hand pay. You couldn't get me to play $2 denomination anymore at any of our local casinos, they're so desperate for dollars I don't have a lot of trust in them.

Quarters is such a comfortable level. When it's bad I lose $20 an hour, sliding through the one to five coin range. When the hot streak becomes sufficiently evident, I simply must strike when that iron is hot.

It does seem to happen like that now, you can play for hours and hours without hitting squat then it turns lose for a short period of time then turns cold again. Best I can tell there's maybe a 30 minute window a few times a week when every machine in the casino is hitting, the key is being there when it happens.

In the micro environment of my own machine, I would guess that there is a five to ten minute window every seventy minutes. You better be jumping in with both feet. It's a condensed happy hour. I'm usually in the Cold cycle, which feels like an Alaskan night. Cheap it out. Don't get get too taken. Suddenly I briefly stumble into the Hot cycle. It feels like a sauna while it lasts.
