Oops They Did It Again, sigh...

I played for a bit today at Empress in Joliet, IL and the woman playing right next to me was platying 5 play DDB. She got DEALT Aces and then I looked and saw she was only playing 1 coin per line. The sad part is she had the credits to play max coins. If that were me I would have needed an aspirin.

Aspirin? I'm thinking something stronger, like a gun.

Thought being if I wasn't going to use the brain, I might as well blow it away.

I don't play short coin, but in the case above, the payout is still linear for each coin. If it had been a dealt Royal, yeah that would be ugly.

I saw it happen at Texas Station (north of Las Vegas) this past Wednesday (Aug 29).  There is a bank of Optimum Play machines close to the Wall of Fame in that casino.  I had sat down and a couple of machines away from me, a young lady was playing $1 Denom DDB on the full-pay machines, 5-credits per hand.  I wasn't paying a lot of attention after noting her game and denom.  After about a half hour, I hear her "scream!".  I looked over and she had hit a Royal.  BUT, she had decreased the denom to a Quarter and was playing only one credit.  Her bankroll had rapidly dwindled at the $1 level and she was trying to milk the machine.  I don't really know if she was playing above her head in denom.  Whether she was addicted to the game or what!  None of my business.  I just felt really bad for her.

I seen lots of short pay royals. Especially on higher denom machines. The one I remember the most was a friend of mine visiting us in LV. He had been playing standard 5 coin quarter. A little while later I heard him gasp and he was dealt a RF playing a single dime. A whopping $25 jackpot.  He commented that he wasn't getting anything. It was his first RF ever playing VP off and on for 20 years (he's mainly a table player). Two days later playing triple play he hit two more on one hand (I've never done this). At least these were full coin.

I'm guilty of that just today. The Harrah's by me has a non-smoking section with only a few VP machines, all the .25 machines were taken so I played a $1 machine at 3 credits each...didn't have a lot allocated to play with and while I was happy to win $750, kind of bittersweet knowing 5 credits would have been 4 grand.

Thing is, if I'd have been playing 5 credits all along, I'd have been out of cash before I hit the royal.

Can't complain at that win though. Went to Blackjack and craps after that and made another $700, so all in all was a very good day.

Best of luck at your favorite casino

I did the same thing about 7-8 years ago. It was a July 4th weekend and the casino was packed. I played quarters at the time and every one of the full pay machines was busy. So, I decided to sit and play 2 coins on a dollar machine hoping that I could find an open quarter machine a little later. I was dealt AKQJ of clubs and as I pressed draw there was absolutely no doubt in my find that the 10 would make an appearence. It did. I was both angry and happy at the same time (can that really happen?).

I should note that playing short coin on this machine was the best payback available (99%). All other quarter machines had paybacks significantly lower (~97%). Also, I realize that had I been hitting max bet it is almost certain that I would never had pressed max bet at the same time as hitting bet once twice followed by deal. So, I never would have gotten the RF. Still, I grumbled for quite a while.

I've got 20 days left before I celebrate my 1-year anniversary of my last Royal <sigh>.  Long dry spell.  Last year, I had one on Sept 4 and followed it with another on Sept 23.  Here lately, I haven't been getting many 4-to-a-Royal draws even.

Do you know how many hands you've played? My longest royalless streak was around 200K hands a couple of times.
