I see this is your first post. Welcome to the forum! There's a huge difference between poker (played with cards against other players) and video poker (played on a machine against a machine). The games are VERY dissimilar. Make sure you know the one you want.Rules are one thing. Strategy is another. There are a number of how-to books for sale for both games. There are hundreds of video poker articles archived on bobdancer.com which you can look at for free. since each one addresses a new subject, it's hard to get a coherent understanding by reading a bunch of 800-word articles. But you can get an idea if this is a game you want to learn more about.Bob

Bob, for the record, are you  or are you NOT, a professional POKER player in addition to being a Video Poker "Authority" (some say  "THE"  Authority)????If you are not a "Pro"  then would you consider yourself simply an "Amateur" Poker player?   Somewhere in between a Pro  and Am?    Do you play tournaments at all ??  (such as the current WSOP going on in Vegas at RIO;   or the many simultaneous-with-the-WSOP poker events currently happening throughout Vegas at the many large and mid-sized Hotel casinos.....for instance, the Wynn is having its "WYNN SUMMER CLASSIC"  from Early June until July 11, to piggyback on the WSOP as it plays itself out over the next month or so.....most casinos with a poker room in Nevada, and also in Southern California like the Commerce Casino in L.A. ,   have something that coincides with the WSOP each summer)http://wynnpoker.com/wynn_summer_classi ... nn%20poker

DB asked: are you or are you not a professional poker player I do not play poker at the professional level. I have played less then 10 tournaments in my life --- with almost all of those compedI sometimes play
$4/$8 Omaha 8 (i.e. limit Omaha hi/lo with an 8 or better to qualify for
the low) at the Orleans for fun. I'm skillful enough to earn $10 or so
an hour --- with big swings. It's just a hobby --- and a social thing
--- something different to do a couple of hours a week.I could
not support myself as a poker player at the present time --- although I
could probably get good enough to earn $30K or more if that's how I
wanted to spend my time and energy. It's not.The personalities of poker players (or video poker players, for that matter) grind on me after awhile. I function better at video poker where for the most part it's a solitary game without a lot of human interaction. Different people have different personalities and preferences. That said, I've interviewed
many poker players and authors on my "Gambling with an Edge" radio show
--- and have read their books. Many of these authors have gone out for
dinner or drinks afterwards and I've gotten to know them and how they
think. As non-experts go, I'm reasonably knowledgeable.Bob

In addition to reading every new article on Tuesdays, I also personally read up on the past articles to get a better insight of the game or even gain a little more motivation during the rough times.

The links to the 2003-2010 articles cannot be accessed. I have noticed the last article of 2010 being "Goodbye CasinoGaming.com", did it change to LasVegasAdvisor (LVA) in 2011? Some of those articles appear in the past are posted again in the LasVegasAdvisor years (2011 - 2015) Is there any way to get a good number of those articles restored?

This is turning into a thread about me --- which is probably inappropriate for this forum. But so long as the questions are reasonably respectful --- and the webmaster doesn't choose to discontinue the thread --- I will continue to answer some of them. On Monday June 22, however, Bonnie and I will be on a 3-week "computer blackout" vacation and I will not be posting thenThe earlier Bob Dancer articles are hosted on the casinogaming.com website --- which is owned by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, but nobody there knows how to access the old articles. I still have the Word documents for all of the articles (several hundred of them). They will be gradually transferred over to the Las Vegas Advisor site, which is where my articles are hosted now.the LVA site is undergoing several changes --- and transferring my old articles is on the list of things to do --- but not nearly at the top of the list.As an author who has a weekly deadline for a column, I like it that 300 of my old articles are not inaccessible. Now I can rerun some of them! Although my video poker knowledge has increased greatly since I wrote many of those older articles (that'll happen to any of you as you continue to study anything seriously), it's a whole lot easier to amend an older article than it is to write one from scratch.Bob

I do not think there should a big issue with the discussion. In my opinion this is one of the many spam threads created so that the visitor can get an achievement for Forum Participation. Achievements help people get into the 7 Stars Tournament easier each month, 4 of them will get you a star head start each month.

Not sure if you mind having a long sticky thread of "Bob Dancer Q&A".

Anyhow, I understood the circumstances of the old articles, I suspected the times when you do not have anything important to discuss current event wise, that it would be good to recycle the past articles.

Enjoy your hiatus from the internet, now and days its become a huge part of people's lives.

Totally agree with alpax. One of the achievements for this "7 Star Tournament" on this site is to post once...and post anything. alpax is one of the few people that made his first post as one of these requirements and stuck around as a regular contributor, now at 600 posts!

Enjoy getting away from the computer and whatever else, Bob. I probably should yank myself from the computer for that long sometime too...

Thanks! I got much insight into the game on these forums as well as the WizardOfVegas forums (I still lurk there).

With the recent Game King machines that got put into the casino floor, it reminded myself that I need to edit up that original post with the newest pay tables information, full pay Jacks or Better is no longer the only option now.
