I was curious to find out what is the most common denomination people on the forum play? I assume is varies based on recreational, semi-professional and professional. I was actually surprised to see there are $100 VP. Does anyone on the forum play for those stakes?
Thanks for your responses!

Only one that I know of that has played the big daddy $100 game...even wrote a book about it. Another is a poker player, but I'll let them speak for themselves.
For myself, 95% of the time I play quarters...no w2g's for non -progressives, comfortable with the low bankroll requirements, and often find the best expected returns, but not always.
The other 5% of the time is taking shots at anywhere from .50c, $1, and $2. Usually lower variant games like JOB or BP, sometimes DDB, NSUD, and TDB. I haven't played higher, but told myself if I ever hit another 4K Royal, take a $1k of it and take a pot shot at $5. Haven't done it yet though.

Also MC it varies on the number of lines played as well. For single line rec players, it's probably either 25c or dollars. But for multiline games, its probably either 5c, 10c, or 25c.

75% single hand dollars, 20% single hand quarters, 10% multi hand nickles - usually UX, double super times, ect.
Only twice have I ever played the $5. Never anything higher.

In 2011 professional poker player Huck Seed hit a royal for over $670,000.00 playing a $100.00 denomination machine at max coin, $500.00.

Majority of the recreational players play quarter denomination, a few play dollars to try to win more, and even fewer play half dollars. A handful of people play $5.
A good amount of places offer more superior paytables at the dollar denomination compared to the quarter denomination, sometimes by a whole percent or more.
It is considerably difficult and hard to justify building a bankroll of at least 5 figures to play over a few years stretch, in some cases it would be well worth it with all things considered (overall payout and the time efficiency to get into higher levels of the slot club like mLife and Total Rewards).
I did see your $5 RF post, and I am aware you were at NYNY at the time with friends. I think Monte Carlo/Bellagio/Aria are the places that are better suited for that level of play, the quality of life is much better in those upscale places. Otherwise the Wynn might be a good place to play if you are not so committed to mLife.

I totally agree with your recommendation of playing at other upscale casinos. If it wasn't for my friends camping at NYNY,I would have been elsewhere. I consider myself a recreational player learning to play perfectly. I need a hobby since I will be semi-retired in a couple of years. Could video poker be my hobby? After hitting the RF, I will continue to play $5 JoB or maybe DDB.

Hitting a $20,000 jackpot is a lot of fun. Right after you hit one the world seems rosy and you feel invincible. You figure you can do it all the time. But $20,000 is NOT a sufficient bankroll to play $5 machines all the time --- even if you find a slot club + promotions to make it positive.According to Video Poker for Winners, for a 9/6 JoB game (assuming you play perfectly --- do you?) and a 0.67% (slot club + mailers + other goodies) has a 83% chance of going broke with only a $20,000 bankroll. For 9/6 DDB you need a MUCH bigger slot club to survive the swings, and even if you find that slot club, the swings are much bigger --- giving you more of a chance of going broke. Slot clubs returning less than 1% give you a 100% chance of going broke long term on a game that returns only 98.98%. A 1.2% slot club (good luck in finding that) cuts your chances of going broke to "only" 93%. (The 8/5 DDB game you were actually playing requires a 3% slot club to have a reasonable chance for long term success.)A $20,000 bankroll is sufficient to play $1 games or maybe 25c Ten Play IF you can find games where the return + slot club is over 100%. If you can't find such games, continuing to play will eventually end up costing you your entire bankroll.

If all you "truly" want is a hobby, then I strongly suggest you keep your play limited to 25 cent denom (maybe 50 cents if you stick to 99%+ games like 8/5 BP, which is not quite as boring as 9/6 job)......Playing 25 cents still allows the casual "hobbyist" to hit decent payouts (especially if you diligently look for the best progressive machines at 25 cents) while keeping the DOWNSIDE of video poker within manageable and tolerable ranges....For myself, 90% of my play is on 25 cent denom......seldom will I play 50 cents or $1, usually when I am up (either from VP or regular LIVE poker) and I find a 8/5 Bonus Poker game. But my overall video poker play (i.e. TOTAL coin in) the last 15+ months is way way down compared to the peak of 2011-2012........The good news is I have accumulated a decent bankroll to take to Vegas (and RENO) in a couple weeks.....ANyone going to be in Vegas the first week of December? Specifically the Golden Nugget Downtown (and surrounding properties where there are better video poker games to be had?) Also, anyone going to be in Reno December 8-9 ?? (Harrahs)
