Quality vs. Quantity

Post by FloridaPhil »

For this coming year, we've decided to limit our play to casinos that offer a minimum of quarter Airport Deuces (98.9%).  This means I won't be making my weekly trips to the Tampa Hard Rock, and will be moving my play to Hollywood about once a month.  That coupled with the reduced number of hands should allow us to play max coins all the time.  If this works well, we may even move up to 50 cents or dollar play.  This also removes the Beau Rivage from our list, but that decision has already been made as the Beau is on our short list of "questionable" games.   I upgraded my account on this website to gold and have been doing pretty well so far.  I hit a royal yesterday and the odds are great!  We will be making our spring trip to Blackhawk CO and hope to get back to the Peppermill in Reno sometime next year.   I'm still working on the idea of making a lone wolf trip to Vegas if I can't find someone to go along. The wife doesn't like gambling unless it's coupled with a vacation of some kind and she's not crazy about Vegas.  We'll see what happens.

Sounds like a plan! - where do you play when you go to Blackhawk? - I have been at the Ameristar for the last year after switching from the Reserve - Perks are not great out here - other than free rooms - the "freeplay" has really dropped almost out of site.

Comps are not a big deal for quarter players.  We get free or discounted rooms and free buffets, but that's about it.  We stay at the Ameristar.  They have a whole row of Airport Deuces behind the craps tables.  The Canyon across the street is good also.  The best odds are at the Monarch at the end of the road. They have six NSU games on the second floor.  We play in Central City also. The whole state is smoke free which is a big bonus for us.

Ameristar has recently moved things around - poker room is upstairs now - all vp has been moved to first floor towards the back of the casino - around where the buffet is. I haven't been to monarch since they took over from the riviera - I heard vp was bad there so I haven't tried it yet. Never been to canyon either - might have to try them - don't play or even know what nsu deuces is - Mainly play ddb multiple lines at .25 - or single lines at .50 - go to a dollar if I hit something BUT (big but) has been a really dry year in 2015. Think I saw one royal all year!

We prefer Deuces Wild because of the lower variance and the 1,000 coin quad deuce mini-jackpot. We don't play DDB because of the huge swings.  I understand the excitement of DDB, but it's a bankroll killer as far as I'm concerned.  Airport Deuces (125-75-45-20-20-15-10-5) is a 98.9% game.  NSU (125-80-50-20-20-15-10-5) is a better game at 99.7%.  We spent a week in Blackhawk last April and the Monarch had NSU on the second floor in the back.  Airport Deuces is easy to find in Blackhawk and Cripple Creek.  Royals are a function of how many hands you play.  My wife and I play a lot of hands, so we see at least 3-6 royals a year.  This year has been a banner year with 8 between us so far.

I think my answer is that quality goes hand in hand with quantity since you need to play through a high volume to experience the benefits a quality full pay game has over a short pay game.

Not too long ago, I was able to uncover that a lucky player who plays 9/5 DDB can do better than an unlucky player who plays 9/6 DDB over one million hands with perfect strategy played.

For expert players like Mr. Dancer, it is both quality and quantity.

Now for me, I have limited bankroll to play with but I go with quality anyways by playing at a higher denomination to get the better paytables. I do not play 10 hours every week, as I can only do that if good games were available for quarters. I play once or twice a month, but I probably cannot expect superior results with little play.

A lucky player can overcome bad odds over the short term.  My play over the last two years proved that to me.  However, there is a point where the odds are so ominous that no manner of luck or strategy can overcome them.  Banging away with max coins at a 96% game for any period of time and expecting anything good to happen is a waste of time as far as I'm concerned.  When royal after royal gets fed back into the machine and you never get ahead, there doesn't seem to be any point in continuing the pain.  If I ever play a game like that again, it's going to be very short term and I'm heading for the exits on any decent win.

I play sparingly, four hours a week, in one or two visits, of 9/6 JOB on a puny bankroll. I had the pipe dream max coin RF in January.  That 40,000 to 1 experience fuels my two hour trips. A fifty dollar win is basically the ceiling.

I agree with the fifty dollar rule. My problem is getting to the fifty. Sometimes I think I should change my handle from Olds to Joe Btfsplk. Now anyone who knows who that is, is really dating themselves.....
