Re: Betting 5 coins?
A better answer is: if you can find a game returning more than 99%, play max coins. if you can't find such a game, don't play.
This is excellent advice. Unfortunately, it doesn't address the issue for most recreational video poker players. If you are going to play a negative game no matter what the odds, doesn't it make sense to give as little to the casino as possible? Cheap Strategy lets recreational players experience the excitement and fun of video poker without the cost. The only people who are unhappy about that are the casinos and the people who work for them.

I thought I found a gold mine when I found a game returning 99.58%, with the free play I was right at positive expectation. Thus far it hasn't worked out for me, on the good side I don't have to pay for hotel, food or drinks. When I first found these games I was kind of surprised to see hardly anyone else playing them.
I did give CS a shot yesterday on deuces and did not do well, but that doesn't mean I'll totally give up on it.
CS is not an "end all fits all" video poker strategy. It's a tool you can use when you want to play a lot of hands cheap while retaining the possibility of a max coin jackpot. Many of today's video poker games pay back less than 98%. If you play video poker at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi for example, you could be losing in excess of 6% an hour with perfect play. These odds cause you to build up huge losses that no manner of skill or luck will get you out of for very long. Not playing these negative games is good advice, but that's not an option for many recreational players who just want to enjoy the game without being robbed. If players would think about their losses more than their wins, most would be better off in my opinion.

Even at the exalted 99.54% JOB, I must budget like Ebenezer to eke out two hours play. It's a tense, taut tightrope session otherwise. Hand over fist losses before a quad will result in a depressing and quick bust. Modest losses will result in about a break even, which allows you to continue elsewhere. I usually abandon ship after all the aggravation it's given me.
