Your thoughts on progressives?

Post by jsm2016 »

There is a bonus deuces wild quarter game with a three-way progressive at a nearby casino. The base game is good (99.45%) and the progressive is known to have a 1% meter (or more), with most of the money metered to the RF. There are three such machines and each player chips in 1% to the "pot." This means the meter rate is up to 3%, although we are all competing (as it were) for the progressive jackpots. For those of you familiar with such games: do you enjoy them? And can you play a game like this one at an advantage?

I have only played this type of progressive a few times over the years, once with some moderate success. I hit an aces major progressive for 8k and later that same night I hit a 2's/3's/4's minor progressive for 1.8k.

My guess is that these progressive machines could not be played at an advantage.

Nothing beats a royal race - a crowded progressive bank with a juicy royal. 10 players banging away hoping to be the fortunate one - playing till it hits or you go broke.

Progressives, especially with fast meters, are often the best ev in VP. I play a lot of 5 meter progressive games. Take a 98% base game with a 1% meter and the royal sitting at $7000 - that is over 100%, not including slot club benefits and the other smaller meters.

Most days, chasing progressives you will lose. But, when your day comes you can really win.

I often see players playing non-progressives at the same paytables as the progressives across the aisle. I wonder why?

This is a beatable game.A 1% meter, even with three machines contributing to it, remains a 1% meter. Still, with a meter that size, a 99.45% game becomes positive. You need to work out your strategies for when the royal is at 4000 coins, 5000 coins, 6000 coins, etc. If you want an average strategy for all progressive levels, read Frank Kneeland's "The Secret World of Video Poker Progressives."Don't worry too much about whether you're going to win today. Usually you won't --- at ANY video poker game. That's irrelevant to winning players. But play this game long enough with the appropriate strategy and you'll hit enough royals that you'll come out ahead.Remember, it's harder to get seats when the meter is at 6000 coins and very easy when it's at 4000. To get the full 1% average return, you need to be able to play it at all levels --- at least some of the time.Good luck.

I am mostly a quarter player and there is a large bank of video poker games at a downtown casino where every time i visit(as I don't live it Vegas) it is over 100%, sometimes way over 100%. I have seen the straight flush at over $300 before. 8/5 bonus is not usually a good enough game for me to consider playing, but the progressives almost always seem to make the game positive. The trick is learning where the break even point to where you change your strategy for the straight flush progressive. I think its fun almost feeling like i'm completing with others on the same bank to hit one of the progressives before they do. Has anyone else had this similar little extra excitement to progressives?

I find hitting progressives like that extra icing on the cake. Makes it even more fun and juicy. I don't usually play them because the pay tables are so lousy and I don't have all the time in the world to play until it hits...(which is correct progressive strategy). But one game I was playing a lot of, .25c single line 10/6 DDB had a slow RF meter and when I was fortunate enough to hit one, gave an extra smile to the vp gods.
Cheers
