Score Display in Challenges

Post by MikeA »

I was able to see that my opponent had finished and ended up -125 before I ever
started.  Had I been less scrupulous than I am, I would have picked a
really low variance game like JOB and played very conservatively to
make sure that I lost no more than he did.  The opponent scores
really shouldn't be shown before both players have finished the round.  It
puts the person who finishes first at a big disadvantage.I do like the challenges though.  They are fun and I think a multi-person tournament format will be just as much fun! This is a GREAT start to the new feature.

One of the things we enjoy most in-house is arranging a time to play and then watching one another's scores in real time as we face off. This requires the score to show before completion. Sometimes it's also fun to set a mark for the person to beat. It can be both a good or bad thing depending on how you do. Maybe there should be an option for the contest to be "blind" where scores are hidden until completion... the challenger could choose either type. Would that be good?I suppose it might even be possible to play out your hand before the contest was accepted if it were a blind competition, since they wouldn't know what they were getting into.  Of course, if they declined it you would have wasted your time.Certainly there are disadvantages to playing first when you don't know when your opponent will play and scores are visible. I believe additional strategy will come into play when these contests have expiration dates that force you to play before a set deadline or forfeit (assuming the challenge has been accepted, of course). You could wait it out hoping the other person would play first and set a mark, but if you wait too long or accept too many challenges without playing them, you could be out of luck.Thoughts on these matters?

When the opponents scores are shown, it would be just like a tournament. If behind, you do nothing but hold for quads, Royals, Deuces, etc. (Wow! That is like "Special Plays".
MikeA makes a good point.

In VP tournament play, you are usually too busy to look at anyone else's scores.  The ones I've played in have been on a time-limit and not on a specific number of hands.  However, I also state that in these tournaments, there is usually a Player's Club Host(est) who walks around all the machines involved in the tournament and announces when someone has hit some large hand and announces the current score of that player.I'd like to have the option for "blind".  I think that makes it more of a contest of skills since you would most likely play the best conventional strategy for that particular game.Speaking of that, other than by agreement between players, I didn't see any option to lock into a particular game for that challenge.  I've never ever seen a tournament where the players could switch games or even choose their game from the machine.  I would think that if you can choose the type of machine, that you would be further able to choose the particular game on that machine for the challenge. All of this stuff I'm noting is here as constructive observation and not as complaining WB.  I think the entire "challenge" concept is a GREAT one!
