Another PEEVE: CAsino harrasment by "Solicitors"

Post by DaBurglar »

<inspired by another thread!>I have to admit, in the last year or so (since May of 2105 I am going to say....)  I have NOT been approached by unwanted solicitations in the AC casinos I have frequented nearly as much or often as in previous years.......Has anyone else seen or noticed the same, or is it worse?   par for the course?By solicitation I mean just that:  either someone approaches you for money (with or without some ridiculous story)......OR, you are approached by a lady of the evening (or these days there really is no "TIME" difference, could be a Lady of the Morning, Lady of Midafternoon, Lady of the Crack of Dawn, etc etc)   with some not-so-subtle offer for carnal enlightment ("knowledge" seems so 20th century)I am not saying it has ceased completely in AC, but it is way way down, so I have to believe  at least some of this is due to casinos finally cracking down consistently on this.....the queries for MONEY were obviously the more numerous of the two, and always involved a story (lost tickets 90% of the time....the oither 10% seemed to involve a spouse or partner who "ran off" with all the money lol)      With the lost tickets, I always told them that   "3 other people have approached me in the last hour with the same story, so my advice is there has to be some HUGE box somewhere around here with a lot of LOST bus tickets!  go check it out!"  (many times it would not have been an actual fib  on my part to dismiss them with this line   lol)As for the hookers, well I think the internet has helped this segment of the economy eliminate the need for in person solicitation.....its that simple.   But it used to be a really annoying problem, not to mention scary when the same woman would repeatedly show up and run through her sales pitch!

Just like the starter of this thread,I have not been approached since May of 2105 by a solicitor. I was though earlier this June of 2016, approached outside of a CVS drug store by a panhandler and I politely declined to participate.

Are you talking about being solicited *inside* the casino? I've never had that happen anywhere! Outside in the parking lot is a different story... The last time I was in AC, though, gambling wasn't legal (!)

It happens quite often here in Vegas. Security is quick to run these bums off though if alerted. Also, they are quite easy to spot as for the most part, you can tell that they don't belong in there and will be carrying a backpack on them.

I would hope in this day and age that casino security would not let anyone walk around with a backpack.

I would hope in this day and age that casino security would not let anyone walk around with a backpack.Pffft, why ?   does this happen to be an issue in the casinos you frequent?......Sometimes in AC the casinos have tried to make everyone with a travel bag, or oversizes napsack  check it in,  but back packs and other carry items that are smaller than a certain size are difficult to force people to part with......many times they are simply the personal equivalent of a woman's handbag, with items like laptops or other electronic items, or a notepad or food or medical supplies/medication (many diabetics these days carry around lots of stuff, as do other people with other involved medical conditions.)I myself have often wheeled around AC casinos, waiting either to check in or to catch my bus, with my travel duffle bag that goes with me every trip that fits perfectly and balances perfectly on my lap and wheelchair....this bag is often quite full of my 5-7 days worth of "Stuff" I bring....and yet I have never had it questioned or taken away or otherwise forced to check it!

About every other visit to Mohegan Sun. Most common is need gas money just to get home. Second most common friends took off without me. I need money for a bus ticket. Third most common...Do you care if I watch you play. Then after a while comes the money line. Note...all of the above happen much more with big credit balances in the machine. I usually tell them all that I have left is what is in the machine and that is my emergency going home money or on a rare occasion....that is what is left of my mortgage money that I am behind on. They don't know what to say after that. I will say 95% have been gals asking. All have been very polite, usually cute, and much younger than me. I mean very much younger. I even think some of their stories may be true. I have actually seen a bunch of kids take off and leave one stranded. Oh...I forgot one...my boyfriend dumped me and I have no way to get home, could you spare a few dollars to help me out. None have ever come right out and asked for things other than the above.

When I first get there, I often have a large leather duffle. I usually have it over my shoulder until I check out some of the menus, lounges, or even a quick free play. I have never been approached or asked about it. On the other hand, I think 90 percent of the employees at Mohegan know me even the security guys. DB might like this one....Last trip shortly after I got there with my big duffle I passed one of my favorite hostesses in the walkway. She yelled my name and when I turned around to greet her I couldn't talk because I had a big chunk of my free monthly Godiva dark chocolate in my mouth. She got me back good when after a couple of seconds I said...I have a hunk of dark chocolate in my mouth would you like some and she said sure and gave me a big hug. I didn't know what to do after that and we both cracked up. She is a real doll and one of the most down to earth employees I have ever met there.
Edited to add....I am in the process of converting from chunky older bald guy to hunky older bald guy by long walks, working out with dumbells, etc. I notice the posted replies about solicitations have increased quite a bit in case that will give others an incentive to do the same. First ten are easy. The rest is just pure work and discipline. Wish I had the same discipline with vp. I'm working on that too.

awesome posts olds442!    quite entertaining to say the least.Yeah, down Uncasville way & surrounding towns (where Mohegan & foxwoods generally are located), you do not have a lot of the same elements as in the BIG cities, like Vegas, AC, or even many of the other smaller gambling destinations (like the few casinos near PHILLY or  Chitcago, etc.)     In other words, there is limited regular "Companions for hire" (i.e. hookers) in Mohegan Sun compared to Vegas & AC....In Foxwoods, EVERYTIME I have been there I have been accosted by someone wanting money for some sort of RIDE out of there (via Bus, cab, you name it.)    I mean EVERYTIME.....Because I am in a wheelchair, but not in really obvious distress or bad shape (meaning I do not look obviously "pathetic") I believe this causes me to be approached more than others ....my brother, and several friends have noticed this too!    It has to do with some complicated "thinking" on the part of people......in the case of Hookers its not too hard or difficult (and several have outright told me what they are thinking):   THEY KNOW I AM NOT A COP!   Also, they know I am not going to beat the crap out of them or abduct them if I were to go back to a room with them (which I obviously WOULD NOT and DO NOT do!)     That makes sense to me......those two risks are heavy on the minds of most prostitutes in any destination or locale. With beggars and panhndlers and otherwise shiftless people looking for money, it is a little more complex:  In AC, people can actually apply for and receive PANHANDLING Licenses, so on the boardwalk you often see people with their cups and their signs asking for money.....some people notice that when I wheel down the boardwalk, I usually put a few quarters or a dollar bill in everyone's cup I see (there are NOT that many usually on any given day!)   so seeing that, other shiftless people who are NOT licensed might see me as an easy mark.        Also, inside the casinos, at 2-3am, if I am at a machine I usually have more than a few credits visible (I rarely buy in for less than 200 bucks when i play VP, that is just me and my method/style)....this obviously motivates some to ask.    And finally, anyone who knows me knows I am usually outgoing and talkative in person, so beggars seeing this from afar strike up a conversation with me with this in mind, again thinking I am "Easy"......of course, under all of this is the simple fact I am not very threatening or intimidating in person, so that more than anything else might make beggars, and hookers, and anyone else with less than honorable but not quite CRIMINAL intentions  able to approach someone like me!Its the same thinking and mind set behind WHY ELDERLY PEOPLE are targeted by scammers and ripoff artists and thieves, etc.    They appear to be "EASY, non-threatening" marks.....VULNERABLE in other words.
