99.73% NSUD questions

Post by Wolfdog1 »

I played this game last week in NV. Had the appropriate strategy card, which I printed from my computer tutorial program. But after I was down a few hundred, I took a break and examined the bottom of the card. It shows, for being dealt one deuce:SF3  W57-W9JSF3  W45-W56ST4  W789-WTJQWST4  W567-W678(not recommended)What is it about a straight that low? There are just as many straight possibilities as the W789-WTJQ, above it. Or the W345 and W456, which aren't even listed. And a 1i W57 ranks higher than a 0i W56?

The lower the straight is, the less helpful the deuce is. Because if a 2 is the rank you need anyway, then the deuce loses its wild power to fill in a straight. Thats why something like 2345 isn't suggested. You either need an Ace, 2, or 6. But if you have 2789, you can make a straight either with a 2, 5, 6, 9, or Ten.

And here is why 256 suited and 257 suited are relatively the same strength.

Here are the rank combinations that help 256:
22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 34, 47, 78

And for 257:
22, 26, 28, 34, 36, 46, 48, 68

Either way there are 8 choices for both hands.

As for your original question, I think if you discard the higher straight cards in favor of deuce only, they give less of a chance to remake the straight on the draw, so that's why you would hold on to them.

My strategy card (Dancer-Daily) has shows penalty card situations where you don't draw to the straight, i.e., these are the fifth card in the hand.

For W567, they are Q,K, or A. For W678, they are 3,K, or A. For W789, they are 3 or 4, and for WTJQ, it is a 3.

Those are advanced strategies. Sounds like the OP isn't there yet.

You are probably right. The basic strategy indicates you hold all 4 card straights from W567 to WTJQ.

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes, I don't do the advanced, with penalty card considerations. Too much work for the relatively little gain, it seems. There was one bank with a $1199 Royal. So even though the W-Ace was normally not recommended, I held it if there were no other of that suit in my hand. Seemed like a prudent play in that particular case.
