AC casino advice

Post by paco13 »

Hello all,

Tomorrow I will be heading to AC for the first time in 7 years. Only staying 2 nights and have a limited bankroll of about $1000. Any advice on where my best chances of stretching that out and staying alive on VP? Casino/Game recommendation? Staying just off the Boardwalk at a Quality Inn. I'm hoping to earn some room offers so I can return again and stay at a casino hotel. Advice on where you can earn good comps with VP play also would be appreciated. If I hit anything decent on VP I will run some money through a slot to earn more points.

Thanks,
paco13

paco13first off, I wish you good fortune in the Video poker wars to come!Second, 1000 bucks is "ok" in terms of a bankroll for a 2 day stay in AC, but you need to realize a few things about the city and its 8 remaining casinos, before you dive headlong into playing video poker there over the coming months and years. The place is in dire straits due to the economic reality that has hit AC over the last 4-5 years......they have seen 4 casinos close (3 of which were LONG TIME members of its casino community), and the remaining 8 casinos are not exactly known for being the most friendly places for players with limited bankrolls for VIDEO POKER.  You face an uphill battle....I know the city and its casinos pretty well (especially from a video poker perspective), and what I think would be best is for me to start by telling you where NOT, absolutely NOT to play!          Here goes:     1)  Resorts AC offers almost ZERO real, useful comps or benefits for playing Video Poker.    They adopted this policy not quite a year ago;  they simply reward video poker players at an absurdly LOW rate/ratio......this is sad since Resorts DOES have a LOT of machines with 8/5 Bonus Poker loaded on them (a 99.2% game!)    But unless you have some deeply personal reason for playing there, do NOT sink your 1000 bucks into Resorts.2)  Trump Taj Mahal is currently in the midst of a workers strike that shows no sign of letting up;  this means you could be forced to play video poker with almost ZERO access to drinks and food (many restaurants are shuttered as well.)   The games at Taj are pretty OLD, the paytables not too great, and if by chance you actually HIT a jackpot,t, or IF your machine malfunctions and your ticket gets stuck or jammed, you could find yourself waiting a VERY VERY long time for a slot tech to show up to help.   The strike will only make this problem all the more severe.     On the plus side, Trump Taj does reward video poker at a decent rate & level compared to other AC casinos, but one more factor to keep in mind is the LONG TERM future of the TAJ is very suspect......even if the strike gets resolved, there is still a GOOD chance the Taj will close in late Autumn (if New Jersey votes to add casinos to Northern New Jersey, look for the Taj to be shuttered by its current "owner", carl Icahn)    Any comps you would earn this trip and thereafter might be GONE by the end of the year!3)  Golden Nugget :   This  casino has made improvements and strides in the last year or so, and it has a good variety of games at different denominations (a lot of 5 cent games too if you want to play SMALL and preserve your Bankroll) ..... most of its machines are Old though, and the rate/ratio of comps for Video poker play is average at best.    I personally LIKE the smaller size of the casino and the atmosphere.....You may want to at least check it out a little, and if you LIKE it, make it your mainstay.4)  Borgata   This might actually be your overall best bet.....they have huge variety and selection of games at all denomination (5 cents and up), best atmosphere & cleanliness, best service, and their players club comps offer fair video poker perks compared to all of AC.   If you paced yourself and your bankroll you should last the 2 days with out busting.......5)  The CET properties (Ballys, Caesars & harrahs):  If you are already a CET player you should at least visit each of these properties to see if any appeal to you as a place to play or give you that all-important feeling of comfort.    HArrahs is by far the nicest, biggest and most wide selection of games of the three.    I would strongly consider Harrahs as a place to play your 1000 bankroll, again pacing yourself over the 2 days.6)  the Tropicana:   This place is the most dynamic in terms of NON Casino features, they have the most restaurants, shops and amenities.   The video poker is so-so in terms of paytables, the comps/benefits from video poker are average for AC.   The benefit to playing here is the fact you can use whatever comps you DO earn on all those great restaurants and shops and amenities!  Hope this helps....and I hope you win

paco, if you are really seeking advice, I would suggest the following. anytime you come up with an extra $1k;

-take $300 to the casino, find the lowest denomination game you can find, play small and have fun. eventually, you will lose it all.

-take $200 and pay down some debt

-take the rest and put it in a low cost stock index mutual fund

years from now, you will thank me.

best of luck!

Good advice from all. Thank you for that and the good luck wishes. Looks like a Jitney ride to the Marina side is in order. Hope to report back with tales of fortune.

If the A.C. Bar and Grill is still open, it's a great place for bar food, drinks and socializing.

Hey speaking of food, anyone know of a place you can get a Lobster roll in AC? I know it's a bit to far South but hey it's on the ocean.

Wow, a quick google search and think I answered my own question. Lobster rolls all over AC. Now to decide where to try.

Well, I have returned home with nothing good to report.
Started feeling sick the night before I headed down to AC.
Most of the trip was spent in the room dosed out on Niquel.
For VP I settled in and played at Bally's. Just didn't feel up to hopping around. It felt more like a chore than fun but I had to play 'cause that's what I went for. First night played 3 hours $1 single line DDBAF. Left even for the night. No premium hands. Wednesday played 2 sessions about 4 hours total. Played 3 hand quarters for a while. All duds. Had to hit the ATM for a short second session. Started on quarters but was taking it quicker than dollars so went for broke back on $1 DDBAF. Held on for a bit then gone.
The first night wasn't bad. Got a couple small quads and quite a few full houses and flushes that kept me going. The second day/night was terrible. Couldn't get anything better than 3oK's. Most of those 3ok's were dealt Aces but none ever turned 4.
Maybe I will get some room offers from TR and I can head back and give it another shot sometime down the road. Can't blame the casino for me being sick and that's what put a damper on the fun. Winning something would have been nice but I went to play and expected to pay.
