VP Players that seem to be in a speed contest!

Post by Raner »

When I play VP, I mostly play BP. The strategy is pretty basic. But there are still a lot of rules to
remember. It takes me a bit of time to evaluate a hand to make sure I have made the correct selection of
cards or card I'm going to hold.
It happens to me more often then not. I'm chugging along playing my machine. A person seats beside me that is
playing a hand seems to me like every three seconds. Man how can anyone Deal, Evaluate, Make the picks and hit
the draw button in three seconds or less and play the strategy correct.
When someone seats beside me doing what I just described, I just really slow down my play to a crawl till they leave.
Because it bugs the hell out of me...
Most of the time they leave pretty quick. They insert a bill one time they lose it and there gone.
If they are sicking on the machine for any length of time, I just go find another machine.
Do other players distract your play when they are playing beside you, But in reality are not doing
any wrong, There just doing a certain thing that bugs you...

Speed is your enemy when playing VP.  If the game is negative, the math says the faster you play, the more hands you play or the bigger your bet, the bigger your loss.  Even if you don't believe math applies to you, playing slow and deliberately decreases errors.  I used to play fast myself (800-1,000 hands an hour) and I thought I was playing accurately.  Testing myself with software, I found I made all kinds of errors I didn't even see.  I could stare right at something and just hit the button. Often I would catch the error too late to do anything about it.   VP is a drug.  The more you play the more your brain wants more, so you speed up to increase the pleasure. Jumping from machine to machine does make you feel better.   I enjoy doing it, but I know it makes no difference what machine I'm on.   The only good thing about machine jumpers is if they are smoking.   I try to hold my breath until they move on.

At South Point, on double points days, you get $6 for every $1,000 you put in. So playing a game like JOB is positive.
I've seen keyboard virtuosos who cant keep up with some of the players . I wrote about watching a guy standing, playing two machines at the speed of light. He's racked up almost 200,000 points when I saw him. That's $1200 in cash plus some great mailers.   Saw him a week or so later at Red Rock doing the same thing.
When I'm playing I try not to notice anyone around me. No matter what they are doing, if I am paying attention to them, I'm not giving my machine the attention it deserves.
As a BJ guru once answered when asked how he dealt with poor players- There are other players at the table?

Button slappers are right up there on my list of annoying players. What's with that anyway?  The last time we were at Hard Rock Hollywood a woman was playing next to us.  She was loudly cussing the machine out using some pretty bad language.  We ignored her and she got more and more abusive.  Finally she ran out of money and started beating the machine screen with her fist.  My wife couldn't take it anymore and asked her to "Save the machine for someone else!".  The lady left.  I guessed she was having  a bad day? Another thing that is really annoying is when a group of people decide to have a big get together right in front of the machines where we are playing.  They stand or sit there and talk so loud everyone else can hear what they are saying.  This is really common in South Florida as the place is full of chatty Latins and New Yorkers.  I know Ted has talked about wearing head phones in a casino on this forum before.  If I order a set along with a gas mask, I should be OK?

Speed Of Light's acronym is SOL. I also slow to a crawl and pray they bust. I always play slow, to minimize the losing. It's JOB, so ABC analysis. But a losing game regardless. The Bally's Button Slapper is a real PITA too. Can't wait him out. He antes up big each session. Hey, I'm switching to a classier crowd at Borgata. Enough is enough. The pow wow next to my machine is another major ordeal. These clowns are prevalent at Borgata, though.

I said they think it's a speed contest. What I meant to say was the speed the Button slappers hit the buttons. How fast they play does not bother me a bit, Its the damn noise they make with the buttons that bugs me...
Most of them play DDB so around twenty hands and there history... DDB is a mean game if you try to play a few hands for the most part. If you don't get a quad real quick you will sink quicker than the Titanic...

I play pretty fast. I used to play faster but have slowed and am trying to back off even more. Mainly to enjoy it more and make the BR last. I am also a chain smoker. You guy's would hate me. I don't slap buttons. I use the touch screen and prefer a machine that has the volume down low. I pretty much zone out while playing. Other people do annoy me or distract me at times. Most perfumes bother me. And loud people playing or hovering around as mentioned.

If I am on a tabletop machine that is clean, and fully functional with no sticky buttons or absurd lighting glare, I can easily clock 1000 or more hands per hour on the several games I know perfect strategy, namely JOB, BP, DB and DDB.   Although I am inactive the last 6 months or so as regards video poker in casinos, back when I was playing one of my standard options was to always put in at least 200-300 bucks (usually more like 500) when I sat down to play.....I was never one of those players who insert a single 20 (or maybe even two 20s) or even 50 dollar bill because, just as the other posters pointed out, you can be long gone on a DB or DDB machine in a very short period.    Typically on JOB or BP (or something like Aces and Faces with a 2:1 payout on two pairs)  you can possibly survive with a 20-40 dollar investment for a long time....but not always. However, generally when you plop in at least 200 bucks, chances are you'll still be plugging away after 35-40 minutes, although in AC especially, quite often this was even not enough and I frequently saw 200 bucks whittled down to 40-50 bucks in less than 30 minutes, sometimes totally gone!!!Speed in itself is only good for racking up player points and comps when either there's a special promo or feature, OR you are simply pressed for time (i.e. need to catch a bus or plane, or meet up with people, and you want to earn X amount of points or comps.)
