VP vs. Slots in 2017

Post by FloridaPhil »

As VP odds have dropped across the country, many players are asking themselves if slot play provides more value for their entertainment dollar.  In the past year, my wife and I have begun to play more and more slots.    The old slots were mind numbing tumbler machines that never seemed to pay anything.    New slots have exciting graphics, sound and can be very entertaining.  The question is are they more costly to play?Assuming you play negative video poker games as most of us do, you are paying to play.   The minimum bet on a quarter VP game is .25 cents a hand, but you aren't eligible for the royal jackpot unless you play max coins at $1.25 a hand.    There are slots where you are eligible for the grand jackpot with minimum play.   The "Gold Pays" firecracker slot is one of our current favorites.  This game allows a minimum wager from .68 cents a hand up to $6.80 a hand.  The progressive Mini, Minor, Major and Grand jackpots are the same no matter how much you wager. The new slots have great graphics and sound.   They also play much slower than VP and the coin counter rings often.   Anyone can easily play 500 hands an hour playing VP.  New slots take time and slower play on a negative game saves money.  I don't like to play slow unless something is happening.  New high definition slots solve this problem.   Also, free bonus games appear at random.  The "Gold Pays" slot allows you to choose up to 25 free games or add a number of wild cards, making play strategy interesting.  Lots of random awards also appear adding to the excitement.Playing slots also earns more comps and free play  than VP.   Since playing more slots, my own free play has doubled and my points accumulate much faster.    Can you win anything playing slots?  Sure!   Big jackpots come at about the same rate as VP.    In the past three months I have won one $500 jackpot and one $700 jackpot from a .68 cent bet.   I play these slots for hours and never complain of being bored.   So far I have not hit a grand jackpot for $4-9K but I will. Are you going to beat a regular slot machine long term?   No, unless you hit a big jackpot and never go back into the casino.  Is it better to play slots than VP?  No.  I still enjoy VP, but I no longer think it's the only game in the casino. There you have it.  Another way to have fun in the casino without risking your retirement funds.  I would love to hear other player's experiences with newer slot play.   What do you think of the new slots?  Does anyone else play them?

I play slots every visit to the casino. I don't have a choice at my regular casino because FP can't be played on VP. I use any winnings/conversion to real cash to play VP most times.
I do play slots with my own money also. It keeps the comps coming at twice the rate of VP. I play progressives mostly because of the chance at a good jackpot. Haven't hit the big one yet though. My second favorite is The old reel type's single line or the 5 line versions.
Your observation is the same as mine that slots seem to hit about the same as VP anymore and can keep me playing for the same time or sometimes longer than VP. They are also cheaper per spin for the same possible jackpot in many cases.
As a matter of fact, just yesterday I went to spend $110 free play I had. I played $55 through a progressive and got nothing. I went over to a .25 cent 5 line "7"'s game and played the other $55. played for half hour and turned it into $300 cash. Of course then I went to .25 cent VP and blew it. Go Figure.

If free play and comps are part of your winnings, why not play a game that gives you more of them?  In our casinos they penalize VP players as VP is not eligible for multi point days.   VP odds are getting so low across the country that you might as well play them both, especially if you value comps like we do.There was a time when a knowledgeably player could gain an edge on VP and there are still a few of those games left in Vegas.  Every now and then a progressive turns positive, but overall VP is a long term loser just like the rest of the slots. As far as we're concerned, casino gambling is entertainment.   Does it matter how you're entertained as long as you're happy?  We have no complaints or we wouldn't go back.

Florida's Indian casinos don't report slot percentages.
However,
Florida gaming regulations require a minimum payback of 85% on all gaming machines.
From July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016, the gaming machines at Magic City returned 93.87%, Casino Miami returned 93.80%, Hialeah Park returned 93.49%, Dania Casino returned 92.21% , Gulfstream Park returned 92.39%, Mardi Gras returned 91.95% , The Isle returned 90.98% and Calder returned 90.89%.

There is no reason to believe the Indian casinos pay out more or less.
Even playing Phil's idiotic single coin nonsense, a VP game will return in the high 95% range, but what the heck, losing is losing. In his rather warped reality, all negative machines are similar. It's all about having fun anyway, right?
Remember children, Uncle Phil doesn't encourage you to play these games, he just spends hours each day praising them.

Billy, thanks for the information.   Where do you come up with this stuff?I read with interest your earlier post about what it takes to make a good living as a professional gambler.   Sounds like a total waste of time to me, but to each his own I guess.  The reason I post on this forum is that no one else does. We go for days and the only thing that gets posted is you promoting Dancer's classes or some other Vegas freebee. You're a regular Vegas Chamber of Commerce.   They should put you on the payroll! As usual you are confusing "theoretical returns" with "actual returns".  Gambling is all about luck both good and bad.  If no one ever walked into a casino unless they had an advantage, you would have nothing to talk about.

The last post I made promoting Dancers class was on March 13th.
Why lie about stuff that can be so easily refuted?
