BillW,

What are the DDB paytables available for you to play at nickels, quarters and dollars? You really can't win at JOB playing short coin if winning money is your objective. People play for different reasons. I understand you are only looking at the % return of the VP machine and don't use mailers, comps, etc in your calculations. DDB may be a better choice if you want to win money during a session. If bonus poker is available, 8/5 BP is better than 9/5 JOB.

I don't know what DDB stands for. Please inform me.
I get 9/5 or 8/6 on a quarter machine. I'd love to find something with a better return than that. If DDB would do it, that would be great. But I would also have to get a cheat sheet on optimum play.

BillW,

Use vpfree2.com -> Tools -> Glossary to look up terms you don't know.   The Bob Dancer Video Poker For Winners computer software is excellent for entering paytables and then selecting 1 coin. It will create a strategy for short coin. Practice the game with correction turned on. There is a test mode too that is the best for practicing the strategy. It tests just about every dealt hand possibility on the strategy chart.

Also you need to scout the games in the casino. It may be possible to play a multi line game single coin that has a better paytables than other single line games. You also have to look at each game. I have seen identical machine next to each other but one machine has better paytables at the lower denominations than all the others.

Also read all the Dancer articles and listen to all his radio shows on bobdancer.com     Watch all the american casino guide videos on YouTube. There is a lot to learn from many professionals that could be applied and followed.

Good Luck!

I'll have to check but I believe the paytables on the machine I play are the same for quarters or dollars (9/6 Jacks or Better). When playing for dollars the payout for a Royal may be the standard 4000 but I am not sure. The quarter payout for Royals is 2500 and increments of 500 for each coin bet.

I continuosly see other patrons put much more money in the machine than I do and are done within five or ten minutes. On my last visit a guy sat down beside me and fed $500 into the machine. Playing dollars at max coins he was finished within 20 minutes although he was playing a much more volatile game...Double Double Bonus I believe.

Am I the only person who finds it somewhat peculiar that this thread, with the rather authoritative title "The Myth of Playing 5 Coins in Video poker", was started by a player who admits to being a video poker neophyte?

I suspect everyone has a pretty fixed pace that they are comfortable playing at. With the exception of professional players, this probably determines what type of machine they should play in order to get the most value of coin in per hour. In my case it is not the max coin machine.

My problem is that I have a certain pace (slow) that I play at and going faster (more mistakes) or slower (boring) is not enjoyable

I certainly didn't expect this kind of response. But it has been fun and I have learned a lot. There is more to VP strategy than pure mathematics.

I'm with you WVRadar, I play very small denominations and, as a result, I live to see the premium hands.I'll have to check but I believe the paytables on the machine I play are the same for quarters or dollars (9/6 Jacks or Better). Your number are way off. A 9/6 JOB game pays 99.54%.,so your expected loss is less than a half a cent, nearly four times less than your "nearly two cents".

I was referring to playing 1 coin on a 9/6 machine. It pays 98.2%, which is nearly 2 cents expected loss.

98.37% if you play one coin optimally...
